This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.
25:1 The parable about not being prepared
25 [ref]“The kingdom of the heavens can also be likened to ten young women in a wedding party who took their lamps and went off to meet the groom. 2 Five of them were harebrained and five were sensible. 3 The less clever ones took their lamps but didn’t take any oil for them, 4 whereas the sensible ones had oil in containers along with the lamps. 5 When the groom was held up, they started nodding off and napping.
6 “But in the middle of the night there was a shout, ‘Look, the groom’s on his way. Come out and meet him.’ 7 So all the young women got up and trimmed the wicks on their lamps, 8 and the less sensible ones asked the others, ‘Here, give us some of your oil because our lamps are starting to splutter.’ 9 But the sensible ones answered, ‘We don’t have enough for everyone. You need to go to the stall and buy some for your lamps.’ 10 However, while they were still away buying oil, the groom appeared and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding and the door was shut.
11 [ref]“Later the other young women arrived and called out, ‘Master, master, let us in.’ 12 But he answered, ‘I can assure you all that I don’t know you.’
13 “So then, be watchful because you all don’t know the day or the time.
25 Then the kingdom of_the heavens will_be_being_likened to_Ten virgins, who having_taken the lamps of_them, came_out in meeting of_the bridegroom.
2 And five of them were foolish, and five were prudent.
3 For/Because the foolish having_taken the lamps of_them, they_ not _took olive_oil with themselves, 4 but the prudent took olive_oil in their containers, with the lamps of_themselves.
5 And the bridegroom delaying, all nodding_off and were_sleeping.
6 But in_the_middle of_the_night, a_clamour has_become:
Behold, the bridegroom.
Be_coming_out to the_meeting.
7 Then all the those virgins were_raised, and they_trimmed the lamps of_themselves.
8 And the foolish said to_the prudent:
Give to_us of the olive_oil of_you_all, because the lamps of_us are_being_extinguished.
9 But the prudent answered saying:
Lest by_no_means may_ not _suffice for_us and you_all, rather be_going to the ones selling, and buy for_yourselves.
10 And them going_away to_buy, the bridegroom came, and the ready ones came_in with him to the wedding_festivities, and the door was_shut.
11 And later the other virgins are_ also _coming saying:
Master, master, open_up to_us.
12 But he answering said:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, I_have_ not _known you_all.
13 Therefore be_watching, because you_all_have_ neither _known the day nor the hour.
By the time of the New Testament, the ancient city of Jerusalem had been transformed from the relatively small fortress of David’s day (2 Samuel 5:6-10; 1 Chronicles 11:4-9) into a major city with a Temple that rivaled the greatest temples in the Roman world. Just prior to Jesus’ birth, Herod the Great completely renovated and expanded the Temple of the Lord, and he also built a lavish palace for himself, various pools (where Jesus occasionally performed healings), public buildings, and military citadels, including the Antonia Fortress, which overlooked the Temple. Wealthy residents, including the high priest, occupied extravagant houses in the Upper City, while the poorer residents were relegated to less desirable areas like the Lower City. The Essene Quarter was so named because many of its residents belonged to the Essenes, a strict religious sect that was known for its careful attention to the law of Moses. Across the Kidron Valley lay the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often met with his disciples (Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-53; John 18:1-14). Further east was the Mount of Olives, where Jesus began his triumphal entry one week before his crucifixion (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19), taught his disciples about the last days (Matthew 24-25; Mark 13), and eventually ascended to heaven after his resurrection (Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:1-11).
