25:1 The parable about not being prepared

25[ref]The kingdom of the heavens can also be likened to ten young women in a wedding party who took their lamps and went off to meet the groom. 2Five of them were harebrained and five were sensible. 3The less clever ones took their lamps but didn’t take any oil for them, 4whereas the sensible ones had oil in containers along with the lamps. 5When the groom was held up, they started nodding off and napping.

6But in the middle of the night there was a shout, ‘Look, the groom’s on his way. Come out and meet him.’ 7So all the young women got up and trimmed the wicks on their lamps, 8and the less sensible ones asked the others, ‘Here, give us some of your oil because our lamps are starting to splutter.’ 9But the sensible ones answered, ‘We don’t have enough for everyone. You need to go to the stall and buy some for your lamps.’ 10However, while they were still away buying oil, the groom appeared and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding and the door was shut.

11[ref]Later the other young women arrived and called out, ‘Master, master, let us in.’ 12But he answered, ‘I can assure you all that I don’t know you.’

13So then, be watchful because you all don’t know the day or the time.

25Then the kingdom of_the heavens will_be_being_likened to_Ten virgins, who having_taken the lamps of_them, came_out in meeting of_the bridegroom.
2And five of them were foolish, and five were prudent.
3For/Because the foolish having_taken the lamps of_them, they_ not _took olive_oil with themselves, 4but the prudent took olive_oil in their containers, with the lamps of_themselves.
5And the bridegroom delaying, all nodding_off and were_sleeping.
6But in_the_middle of_the_night, a_clamour has_become:
Behold, the bridegroom.
Be_coming_out to the_meeting.
7Then all the those virgins were_raised, and they_trimmed the lamps of_themselves.
8And the foolish said to_the prudent:
Give to_us of the olive_oil of_you_all, because the lamps of_us are_being_extinguished.
9But the prudent answered saying:
Lest by_no_means may_ not _suffice for_us and you_all, rather be_going to the ones selling, and buy for_yourselves.
10And them going_away to_buy, the bridegroom came, and the ready ones came_in with him to the wedding_festivities, and the door was_shut.
11And later the other virgins are_ also _coming saying:
Master, master, open_up to_us.
12But he answering said:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, I_have_ not _known you_all.
13Therefore be_watching, because you_all_have_ neither _known the day nor the hour.

25:14 The parable about using what you’re given

(Luke 19:11-27)

14[ref]It’s like a man who was leaving on a trip. He called his slaves and shared his savings among them for them to manage. 15He gave five bags of silver[fn] to one, two bags to another, and one to the other, each according to his ability, and then he departed. 16In his absence, the one with five bags of silver used it for trading and gained five more bags. 17Similar, the one with two bags gained two more bags. 18But the one who received the one bag, he went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s silver.

19Eventually the master of those slaves returned, and he called them in to settle up their accounts. 20The slave who’d received five bags of silver approached, also bringing the other five bags, and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with five bags, and look, I gained another five.’ 21‘Well done, good and faithful slave,’ said the master. ‘You were faithful over a few things, so I’ll put you in charge of a lot more things. Come and join your master in celebrating.’ 22The slave who’d received two bags approached and said, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two bags of silver. Look, I gained another two.’ 23‘Well done, good and faithful slave,’ said the master. ‘You were faithful over a few things, so I’ll put you in charge of a lot more things. Come and join your master in celebrating.’ 24Then the slave with one bag of silver also approached and said, ‘Master, I knew that you’d are hard man, harvesting where you didn’t plant, and gathering where you didn’t spread seed. 25So because I was afraid, I went and hid your silver in the ground. So look, here’s all of it back.’ 26‘You evil and lazy slave,’ his master answered. ‘You know that I harvest where I didn’t plant and gather where I didn’t spread seed 27so you should have at least invested my silver with the bankers and then I could have gotten it back with some interest. 28Therefore take the bag of silver off him and give it to the one with ten bags 29[ref]because everyone who has will be given more and will have plenty, but anyone who doesn’t have, even what they do have will be taken away from them. 30[ref]So throw that useless slave out into the darkness where there’ll be crying and great anguish.

14For/Because as a_man travelling called his own slaves and gave_over the things possessing of_him to_them.
15And on_one_hand he_gave five talantons_of_silver to_one, on_the_other_hand two to_one, on_the_other_hand one to_one, to_each according_to his own ability, and he_travelled immediately.
16Having_been_gone, the one having_received the five talantons_of_silver worked with them and gained other five talantons_of_silver.
17Likewise also the one with_the two gained another two.
18But the one having_received the one, having_gone_away, dug the_ground and hid the silver of_the master of_him.
19And after much time, the master of_ the those _slaves is_coming, and he_is_settling_accounts the_account with them.
20And having_approached the one having_received the five talantons_of_silver, brought the_other five talantons_of_silver saying, Five talantons_of_silver, master, you_gave_over to_me, see, I_gained.
another five talantons_of_silver.
21The master of_him was_saying to_him:
Well done, good and faithful slave.
You_were faithful over a_few things, I_will_be_appointing you over many things, come_in into the joy of_the master of_you.
22The one with_the two talantons_of_silver having_ also _approached said:
Master, you_gave_over two talantons_of_silver to_me.
Behold, I_gained another two talantons_of_silver.
23The master of_him was_saying to_him:
Well done, good and faithful slave.
You_were faithful over a_few things, I_will_be_appointing you over many things, come_in into the joy of_the master of_you.
24And the one having_received with_the one talanton_of_silver, having_ also _approached said:
Master, I_knew you, that you_are a_hard, man, reaping where you_ not _sowed, and gathering_together whence you_ not _scattered.
25And having_been_afraid having_gone_away, I_hid the talanton_of_silver of_you in the ground.
Behold, you_are_having the your own.
26But the master of_him, answering said to_him:
Evil and reluctant slave.
You_had_known that I_am_reaping where I_ not _sowed, and I_am_gathering_together whence I_ not _scattered.
27Therefore it_was_fitting you to_put the silver_coins of_me to_the bankers, and having_come, I would received_back the mine with interest.
28Therefore take_ the talanton_of_silver _away from him, and give it to_the one having the ten talantons_of_silver.
29For/Because to_everyone which having will_be_being_given and will_be_being_in_abundance, but the one not having, even what he_is_having will_be_being_taken_away from him.
30And throw_out the useless slave into the the outer darkness.
There will_be the weeping and the grating of_ the _teeth.

25:31 Separating sheep and goats

31[ref]But when humanity’s child comes in his glory and all the messengers with him, then he’ll sit down on his splendid throne 32and all the nations will be gathered together in front of him. He’ll separate them all from each other, just like a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33Then the sheep will be standing on his right, and the goats on his left 34and the king will say to the sheep on his right, ‘Come all of you who’ve been blessed by my father. Now you’ll inherit the kingdom that has been prepared for you since the creation of the world 35because I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you accommodated me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to see me.’ 37Then those godly people will ask, ‘Master, when did we ever see you hungry and we fed you, or thirsty and we gave you a drink? 38And when did we see you as a stranger and accommodate you, or naked and we clothed you? 39And when did we see you in prison, and we came to see you?’ 40Then the king will answer them, ‘I can assure you that whenever you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, then you did it to me.’

41Then the king will also speak to the ones on his left, ‘Get away from me you who are cursed. You’ll go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his messengers. 42Because I was hungry and you didn’t give me anything to drink, I was thirsty and you didn’t give me anything to drink, 43I was a stranger and you didn’t offer me shelter, I was naked and you didn’t give me any clothes, and I was sick and in prison and you never visited me.’ 44Then they’ll also respond, ‘Master, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty, or a stranger or naked, or sick or in prison and we didn’t help you?’ 45‘I can assure you,’ the king answered, ‘that whenever you failed to help even one of the least of these others, you failed to serve me.’ 46[ref]Then this group will be sent off to eternal punishment, but the guiltless ones will receive eternal life.

25:15 Probably silver coins, or possibly gold, and perhaps each bag weighing up to 24kg, although these details aren’t vital to the story. (See https://wpmu2.azurewebsites.net/nlt/2024/02/01/word-studies-in-the-new-living-translation-τάλαντον-talanton.)

31But whenever the son of_ the _man may_come in the glory of_him, and all the messengers with him, then he_will_be_sitting_down on throne of_glory of_him.
32And all the nations will_be_being_gathered_together before him, and will_be_setting_apart them from one_another, as the shepherd is_setting_apart the sheep from the goats.
33And the sheep will_be_standing on_one_hand on the_right of_him, on_the_other_hand the goats on the_left.
34Then the king will_be_saying to_the ones on the_right of_him:
Come you_all having_been_blessed of_the father of_me, inherit the kingdom having_been_prepared for_you_all from the_foundation of_the_world.
35For/Because I_hungered and you_all_gave to_me to_eat, I_thirsted and you_all_gave_ me _to_drink, I_was a_stranger and you_all_brought_ me _in, 36naked and you_all_clothed me, I_ailed and you_all_visited me, I_was in prison and you_came to me.
37Then the righteous will_be_answering to_him saying:
master, when we_saw you hungering and we_fed, or thirsting and we_gave_to_drink?
38And when we_saw you a_stranger and we_brought_in, or naked and we_clothed?
39And when we_saw you sick or in prison, and we_came to you?
40And the king answering, will_be_saying to_them:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, because/for as_much_as you_all_did it to_ the least _one of_these the brothers of_me, you_all_did it to_me.
41Then he will_ also _be_saying to_the ones on the_left:
Be_going from me having_been_cursed ones into the the eternal fire, which having_been_prepared for_the devil and the messengers of_him.
42For/Because I_hungered and you_all_ not _gave to_me to_eat, and I_thirsted and not you_all_gave_ me _to_drink, 43I_was a_stranger and you_all_ not _brought_in me, naked and you_all_ not _clothed me, sick and in prison and you_all_ not _visited me.
44Then they will_ also _be_answering saying:
master, when we_saw you hungering, or thirsting, or a_stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and we_ not _served unto_you?
45Then he_will_be_answering to_them saying:
Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, because/for as_much_as you_all_ not _did it to_ of_these the _one least, neither you_all_did it to_me.
46And these will_be_going_away into eternal punishment, but the the_righteous into eternal life.

Jerusalem during the New Testament

By the time of the New Testament, the ancient city of Jerusalem had been transformed from the relatively small fortress of David’s day (2 Samuel 5:6-10; 1 Chronicles 11:4-9) into a major city with a Temple that rivaled the greatest temples in the Roman world. Just prior to Jesus’ birth, Herod the Great completely renovated and expanded the Temple of the Lord, and he also built a lavish palace for himself, various pools (where Jesus occasionally performed healings), public buildings, and military citadels, including the Antonia Fortress, which overlooked the Temple. Wealthy residents, including the high priest, occupied extravagant houses in the Upper City, while the poorer residents were relegated to less desirable areas like the Lower City. The Essene Quarter was so named because many of its residents belonged to the Essenes, a strict religious sect that was known for its careful attention to the law of Moses. Across the Kidron Valley lay the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often met with his disciples (Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-53; John 18:1-14). Further east was the Mount of Olives, where Jesus began his triumphal entry one week before his crucifixion (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-19), taught his disciples about the last days (Matthew 24-25; Mark 13), and eventually ascended to heaven after his resurrection (Luke 24:50-53; Acts 1:1-11).
