Yeshua and Yohan-the-immerser

This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

Readers’ Version

Literal Version

11:1 Yeshua and Yohan-the-immerser

(Luke 7:18-35)

11When Yeshua had finished giving those instructions to his twelve apprentices, he also left there and went to teach and preach in the Jewish cities.

2Then Yohan, who was in prison, heard about what the messiah was doing, he sent some of his apprentices 3to ask Yeshua, “Are you the promised one, or should we be waiting for someone else?”

4Well,Yeshua answered, “go and tell Yohan everything that you’re hearing and seeing: 5[ref]those who were blind can see now, lame people are now walking, people will leprosy are ‘clean’, deaf people can now hear, dead people have been brought back to life, and the good message is being preached to the poor. 6Anyone who’s not embarrassed by me will be blessed.

7As Yohan’s apprentices left, Yeshua started talking to the crowd about Yohan: “What was it that you all went out to the wilderness to see? A reed being blown around by the wind?[fn] 8Yes, what did you all go out to see? A man wearing fine clothes? People in palaces wear fine clothes. 9So why did you go out there? To see a prophet? Yes, I’m telling you that he is a prophet, and even more important than the prophets. 10[ref]He is the one that was written about: ‘See, I’m sending out my messenger ahead of you and he’ll prepare your path before you.’ 11I can assure you that no person who’s ever been born is greater than Yohan-the-immerser. But even the least important person in the kingdom of heavens is greater than him. 12[ref]From the time of Yohan-the-immerser through to the present time, the kingdom of the heavens has been opposed, and the opposition is grabbing at it. 13All the prophets and the law prophesied before Yohan came, 14[ref]and now, if you’re all willing to believe it, he is Eliyyah—the one who would come ahead. 15Anyone who is willing, let them strive to understand this.

16So what should I liken this generation to? It’s like young children sitting in the town centre who are calling out to others 17and saying, ‘We played lively music for you but you didn’t dance. Then we played sad music, but you didn’t mourn.’ 18Because Yohan came and he wasn’t eating or drinking, and they said, ‘He’s possessed by a demon!’ 19Then humanity’s child came and he was eating and drinking, but they said, ‘Look at this fellow—he’s a glutton and a drunkard—a friend of tax collectors and immoral people.’ But wisdom is only recognised with hindsight.

11:7 We’ve left the original idiom here in the OET-RV as something to puzzle over, because no one now really knows what aspect of Yohan’s behaviour or appearance that Yeshua was referring to here.

11And it_became when the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) finished directing to_the twelve apprentices/followers of_him, he_departed from_there which to_be_teaching and to_be_proclaiming in the cities of_them.
2And the Yōannaʸs, having_heard in the prison the works of_the chosen_one/messiah, having_sent through of_the apprentices/followers of_him, 3said to_him:
Are you the one coming, or are_we_waiting for_another?
4And the Yaʸsous answering said to_them:
Having_been_gone report to_Yōannaʸs what you_all_are_hearing and you_all_are_seeing:
5blind are_receiving_sight, and lame are_walking, lepers are_being_cleansed, and deaf are_hearing, and dead are_being_raised, and poor are_being_good_message_preached.
6And he_is blessed who if may_ not _be_offended in me.
7And these going, the Yaʸsous began to_be_saying to_the crowds concerning Yōannaʸs, you_all_came_out into the wilderness to_see What?
A_reed being_shaken by wind?
8But you_all_came_out to_see what?
A_man having_been_dressed in fine clothes?
Behold, the ones wearing the fine clothes in the houses of_the kings
9but why you_all_came_out?
To_see a_prophet?
Yes, I_am_saying to_you_all, and more_important than a_prophet.
10This one is concerning whom it_has_been_written:
Behold, I am_sending_out the messenger of_me before the_face of_you, who will_be_preparing the way of_you before you.
11Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, not has_been_raised among the_born ones of_women greater than greater than Yōannaʸs the immerser.
But the the_least in the kingdom of_the heavens, is greater than he.
12And from the days of_Yōannaʸs the immerser until now, the kingdom of_the heavens is_forcing, and forceful_men they_are_snatching it.
13For/Because all the prophets and the law prophesied until Yōannaʸs.
14And if you_all_are_willing to_receive it, he is Aʸlias/(ʼĒliyyāh), the one going to_be_coming.
15The one having ears to_be_hearing, let_him_be_hearing.
16But to_what I_will_be_likening the this generation?
It_is similar to_little_children sitting in the marketplaces, who calling_out to_the others
17are_saying:
We_played_the_flute for_you_all and you_all_ not _danced, we_lamented and you_all_ not _mourn.
18For/Because Yōannaʸs came neither eating nor drinking, and they_are_saying:
He_is_having a_demon.
19The son of_ the _man came eating and drinking, and they_are_saying:
Behold, a_man, a_glutton and a_drunkard, a_friend of_tax_collectors and of_sinners.
But the wisdom was_justified by the her children.
