TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-49 This section expands the discussion begun in 3:21-37 on the duties of the three clans of Levites. The Levites—on the march and encamped—carried and cared for the Tabernacle and were always surrounded by the other tribes so that they and their precious cargo would be safe (2:17). The sacred things associated with God were placed in the middle of the tribes, and the role of the priests and their Levitical assistants was to keep them holy by keeping them separate.
• God, in his holiness, is worthy of attention to the details of his will. His Tabernacle and its furnishings were sacred, and the tribe of Levi was responsible to maintain the distinction between holy and common, between clean and unclean. This explains why so much information is provided about the duties of the three clans of Levites.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וּפְקֻדַּ֞ת & פְּקֻדַּ֗ת

and,charge & oversight

See how you translated the abstract noun oversight in 3:32.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

שֶׁ֤מֶן הַמָּאוֹר֙

oil the=luminary

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the oil that is burned to produce light in the tent of meeting. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the oil that is used for light”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

וּקְטֹ֣רֶת הַסַּמִּ֔ים

and,incense the,fragrant

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the incense that is made of various spices that are described in Exodus 30:3438. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the incense that is made of spices”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

וּמִנְחַ֥ת הַתָּמִ֖יד

and,grain_offering the,regular

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the grain offering that the Levites were to offer to Yahweh continually. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. See how you translated the same use of continuity in 4:7.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

וְשֶׁ֣מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָ֑ה

and,oil the,anointing

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the oil that was poured on the priests, all the parts of the tent of meeting, and the items used in it (Exodus 30:2238). If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the oil that is used for anointing”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

פְּקֻדַּ֗ת

oversight

Since the oversight is repeated from earlier in the verse, the expression here is extra information that would be unnatural to express in some languages. If this is true of your language, you could remove the expression here, as in the UST.

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / quotemarks

וּבְכֵלָֽיו

and,in/on/at/with,utensils,its

The direct speech that began in 4:2 ends at the end of this verse. Consider natural ways of ending direct quotations in your language.
