Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. FBV This is what you have to do so that they'll live and won't die by getting too close to something holy. Aaron and his sons must go in and tell each of them what they have to do and what they have to carry.
T4T 18-20 “When the descendants of Kohath approach the sacred items in the Sacred Tent to take them to another location, Aaron and his sons must always go in with them and show each of them what work to do and what things to carry. But the descendants of Kohath must not enter the Sacred Tent at any other time and look at the things that are in it. If they do that, I will get rid of all the descendants of Kohath.”

4:1-49 This section expands the discussion begun in 3:21-37 on the duties of the three clans of Levites. The Levites—on the march and encamped—carried and cared for the Tabernacle and were always surrounded by the other tribes so that they and their precious cargo would be safe (2:17). The sacred things associated with God were placed in the middle of the tribes, and the role of the priests and their Levitical assistants was to keep them holy by keeping them separate.
• God, in his holiness, is worthy of attention to the details of his will. His Tabernacle and its furnishings were sacred, and the tribe of Levi was responsible to maintain the distinction between holy and common, between clean and unclean. This explains why so much information is provided about the duties of the three clans of Levites.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
וְחָיוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א יָמֻ֔תוּ
and,live and=not die
The word live and the phrase not die mean the same thing. Yahweh is using these together for emphasis. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express the emphasis with a single phrase. Alternate translation: “and they will certainly live”
Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal
וְחָיוּ֙
and,live
Here, and indicates that what follows is the goal or purpose for the command in this verse. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that this is the purpose. Alternate translation (with no comma preceding): “so that they will live”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
וּבָנָיו֙
and,sons_of,his
Here, sons refers to male descendants. See how you translated the same use of sons in [3:9](../03/09.md).
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
יָבֹ֔אוּ
they_went
Here Yahweh implies that Aaron and his sons enter into the holy place. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly, as in the UST.
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
וְשָׂמ֣וּ
and,assign
Here Yahweh refers to assigning work to the Kohathites as if one were placing them in locations. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and assign”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
אוֹתָ֗ם אִ֥ישׁ אִ֛ישׁ
DOM,them (a)_man (a)_man
Here, man by man is a Hebrew idiom that means “each man.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternative translation: “each man”
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
עֲבֹדָת֖וֹ
task_of,his
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of service, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “what he does to serve”
Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
מַשָּׂאֽוֹ
burden_of,his
See how you translated the same use of load in [4:15](../04/15.md).
