TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-49 This section expands the discussion begun in 3:21-37 on the duties of the three clans of Levites. The Levites—on the march and encamped—carried and cared for the Tabernacle and were always surrounded by the other tribes so that they and their precious cargo would be safe (2:17). The sacred things associated with God were placed in the middle of the tribes, and the role of the priests and their Levitical assistants was to keep them holy by keeping them separate.
• God, in his holiness, is worthy of attention to the details of his will. His Tabernacle and its furnishings were sacred, and the tribe of Levi was responsible to maintain the distinction between holy and common, between clean and unclean. This explains why so much information is provided about the duties of the three clans of Levites.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

שֻׁלְחַ֣ן הַפָּנִ֗ים

table the,presence

Here, faces represents the presence of Yahweh. This table was placed before the presence of Yahweh in the tent of meeting and the Levites were to place on it special bread for Yahweh, as described in Exodus 25:30. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. See how you translated the similar use of “face” in 3:4. Alternate translation: “the table in Yahweh’s presence” or “the table of the presence”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

בֶּ֣גֶד תְּכֵלֶת֒

cloth blue

See how you translated the similar phrase “a cloth entirely of blue” in the previous verse.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns

עָ֠לָיו & עָלָ֥יו

on/upon/above=him/it & on/upon/above=him/it

In this verse, it refers to the cloth of blue that covers the table. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “on that cloth … on that cloth”

אֶת־הַקְּעָרֹ֤ת וְאֶת־הַכַּפֹּת֙ וְאֶת־הַמְּנַקִּיֹּ֔ת וְאֵ֖ת קְשׂ֣וֹת

DOM the,plates and=DOM the,dishes and=DOM the,bowls and=DOM pitchers

If a translation exists in your language, see how the words plates, palm-sized pans, bowls, and pitchers are translated in Exodus 25:29 and 37:16.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

קְשׂ֣וֹת הַנָּ֑סֶךְ

pitchers the,drink_offering

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe pitchers that were used for pouring out the drink offering. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “the pitchers for the drink offering”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

הַנָּ֑סֶךְ

the,drink_offering

The phrase drink offering represents drink offerings in general, not one particular drink offering. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural expression. Alternate translation: “drink offerings”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

וְלֶ֥חֶם הַתָּמִ֖יד

and,bread the,regular

Here Yahweh is using the possessive form to describe the bread that the Levites were to offer to Yahweh continually. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “and the bread that should be offered continually”
