5.21 Filioli. Et quia verum Deum et verum hominem cognoscitis, et vitam æternam exspectatis, custodite vos a doctrinis hæreticorum, qui speciem sanctitatis sibi assumunt, qui pravis dogmatibus gloriam incorruptibilis Dei in similitudinem corruptibilium rerum mutant. Avaritia enim est simulacrorum servitus; qui ergo mundum Deo præponunt, idololatræ sunt. Custodite. Cum testimonium perfectionis in multis perhibuerit illis, poterat tamen adhuc timeri, ne aliquis nuper conversus reliquias superstitionis mente retineret, ideoque ab idolorum cultu fugiendum esse demonstrat.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:21 In closing, John exhorts his flock to keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts (literally keep yourselves from idols). In the context of 1 John, the primary idol would be any false teaching that takes people away from Jesus Christ, who is at once fully man and fully God.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τεκνία

little_children

See how you translated children in 2:1. Alternate translation: “You dear believers who are under my care”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

φυλάξατε ἑαυτὰ ἀπὸ

keep yourselves from

Here, keep yourselves from is an idiom that means “avoid.” If this phrase does not have that meaning in your language, you could use an idiom from your language that does have that meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “have nothing to do with” or “stay away from”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τῶν εἰδώλων

¬the idols

Here, idols could mean: (1) figurative idols, that is, anything that might take the place of the real God in a person’s life. Alternate translation: “anything that might take the place of God in your life” (2) literal idols, that is, statues that were worshiped as if they embodied a god.
