TSNTyndale Study Notes:

15:1-41 Chapters 1–14 took place in a relatively short period of time, but ch 15 describes the beginning of a long period—the bulk of the forty years in the wilderness—about which relatively little is known, though there are references to events that took place during the wilderness wanderings (e.g., Deut 8:2-6; 29:5-6; Josh 5:4-8; Ezek 20:10-26; Amos 5:25-26; Acts 7:42-43). During this period, Moses continued to deliver legislation to govern Israelite society, especially for that day when survivors of the wilderness would finally enter the Promised Land. This chapter deals with three categories of legal matters. Presented in the middle of stories about a stubborn and disobedient Israel, Num 15 raises hope that the Promised Land still awaited Israel’s descendants.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) As you are, so also must be the traveler

(Some words not found in UHB: the,assembly statute one(fs) to/for=you_all and,for_the,alien the,sojourns statute perpetual throughout,generations,your_all's as,you_all so_the,alien will_belong to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH )

This could mean: (1) “You and the traveler staying with you are alike before Yahweh” or (2) “The same law applies to both you and the traveler”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) He must act as you act before Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: the,assembly statute one(fs) to/for=you_all and,for_the,alien the,sojourns statute perpetual throughout,generations,your_all's as,you_all so_the,alien will_belong to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH )

Because it says that they must act as the Israelites in Yahweh’s presence, it is implied that they must obey all of Yahweh’s commands. Alternate translation: “he must act as you act and obey all of Yahweh’s commands”
