Matthew 8

8 And when he came down from the mountain, many crowds followed him. 2 And behold, a leper came up and worshiped[fn] him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3 And stretching out his hand, {he}[fn] touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And [immediately][fn] his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer {the}[fn] gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

5 When {he}[fn] entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, pleading with him, 6 [and][fn] saying, “[Lord,][fn] my servant is lying at home paralyzed, terribly tormented.” 7 And {he}[fn] said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 {And}[fn] the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy for you to come under my roof, but only say the word, [and my servant,][fn] he will be healed. 9 For I too am a man [[being appointed]],[fn] under authority, having soldiers under me, and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled[fn] and said to those following him, “Truly, I tell you, {I have not found such great faith in Israel}.[fn] 11 And I tell you that many will come from the east and the west and will recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens, 12 but the sons of the kingdom[fn] will be thrown into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go, as you have believed, let it be done to you.” And {the}[fn] servant was healed in that hour. [[And the centurion, having returned to his house in that very hour, found the servant restored to health.]][fn]

14 And when Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying down and suffering from a fever; 15 and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and served {him}.[fn]

16 When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed; and he cast out the [[unclean]][fn] spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, “He took our weaknesses, and he bore the diseases.”[fn]

18 And when Jesus saw {a crowd}[fn] around him, he ordered to go to the other side. 19 And one scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have dens and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

21 But another of {the}[fn] disciples said to him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”

22 But {Jesus}[fn] {says}[fn] to him, “Follow me and let the dead bury their own dead.”

23 And when he got into {a}[fn] boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, a great earthquake[fn] occurred in the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves, but he was sleeping. 25 And {they}[fn] came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us, we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that [even][fn] the winds and the sea obey him?”

28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the {Gadarenes},[fn] two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, extremely fierce, so that no one could pass by that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with you, [[Jesus,]][fn] Son of God? Have you come here to {torment}[fn] us before the time?” 30 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding at a distance from them. 31 The demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, {send us}[fn] into the herd of pigs.” 32 And {he}[fn] said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the [[herd of]][fn] pigs; and behold, the whole herd [[of pigs]][fn] rushed down the cliff into the sea and died in the waters.

33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city, they reported everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to depart from their region.
