Matthew 6

6 “Be careful [then][fn] not to {practice your righteousness}[fn] before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise, you have no reward from your Father who is in the heavens.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be glorified by men; truly [[, truly]][fn] I say to you, they have received their reward.

3 “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret [[himself]][fn] will reward you [[openly]].[fn]

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to [[stand]][fn] praying in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by men; truly I say to you, [[because]][fn] they have received their reward.

6 “But when you pray, go into your inner room, and having shut the door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you [[in the open]].[fn]

7 “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Therefore, do not be like them; for [[God]][fn] your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father who is in the heavens; let your name be sanctified;[fn] 10 let your kingdom come; let your will be done, [as][fn] in heaven, so also on earth. 11 Give us today our daily bread; 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven[fn] our debtors; 13 and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one [[, for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen]].[fn]

14 “[For][fn] If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men [their trespasses],[fn] neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

16 “But when you fast, do not become [[just]][fn] like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to men to be fasting. [[For]][fn] Truly I say to you [[that]],[fn] they have their reward.” 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you may not appear to men as fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward [you][fn] [[in the open]].[fn]

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in [nor steal];[fn] 21 for where {your}[fn] treasure is, there your heart will be [also].[fn]

22 “The lamp of the body is {the}[fn] eye. [Therefore,][fn] If your eye is clear,[fn] your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [or what you will drink],[fn] nor about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they?

27 “And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29 yet I say to you [that][fn] even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these [[of the field]].[fn]

30 “Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ Or, ‘What shall we drink?’ Or, ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For all these things the nations seek; for your [heavenly][fn] Father knows that you need all these things.

33 “But seek first the kingdom [of God][fn] and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

34 “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
