Matthew 20

20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man, a master of the house, who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 And having agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace 4 and said to them, ‘Go also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ 5 So they went. {Again},[fn] going out about the sixth and ninth hour, he did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh [[hour]],[fn] going out, he found others standing [[idle]][fn] and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go also into {the}[fn] vineyard [[and whatever is right you will receive]].’[fn]

8 “And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the workers and give [them][fn] their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’ 9 And those who came about the eleventh hour each received a denarius. 10 {And}[fn] when the first came, they thought they would receive more; {and}[fn] they also received a denarius each. 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the master of the house, 12 saying [that],[fn] ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am not doing you wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go. But [[also]][fn] I want to give to this last man the same as I give to you. 15 [Or][fn] Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. [[For many are called, but few are chosen]]”[fn]

17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took {the}[fn] twelve [disciples][fn] aside privately and said to them [on the way],[fn] 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him [to death][fn] 19 and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and on the third day he {will be raised}.”[fn]

20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling and asking something from him.

21 But he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that {these}[fn] two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in {your}[fn] kingdom.”

22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink [[and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with]]?”[fn] They said [to him],[fn] “We are able.”

23 [And][fn] {He}[fn] said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup [[And the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized]],[fn] but to sit at my right hand {and}[fn] at my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

24 {And}[fn] when the ten heard this, they {were}[fn] indignant about the two brothers.

25 But Jesus called them to him and said [[to them]],[fn] “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 [[But]][fn] It will not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you will be your servant; 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. [[But you seek to grow from little and to be less from greater. But when you enter and are invited to dine, do not recline in the prominent places, lest someone more honorable than you comes, and the one who invited comes and says to you, ‘Move down further,’ and you will be put to shame. But if you recline in the lower place, and one lesser than you comes, the one who invited will say to you, ‘Move up further,’ and this will be beneficial for you.]]”[fn]

29 And as they were going out from Jericho, a large crowd followed [him].[fn] 30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, [Lord,][fn] [[Jesus]][fn] Son of David.”

31 But the crowd rebuked them so that they would be silent; yet they cried out {even}[fn] more, saying, “Have mercy on us, Lord,[fn] Son of David.”

32 And Jesus, stopping, called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord,[fn] that our eyes may be opened.” 34 And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately {they regained their sight and followed him}.[fn]
