Matthew 27

27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death; 2 and having bound him, they led him away and handed [him][fn] over to [[Pontius]][fn] Pilate the governor.

3 Then, when Judas, the one who handed him over, saw that he was condemned, he regretted it and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by handing over {innocent}[fn] blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.” 5 And throwing the [[thirty]][fn] silver coins {into}[fn] the temple, he withdrew, and going away, he hanged himself.

6 But the chief priests, taking the silver coins, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”

7 So, after taking counsel, they bought with them the potter's field as a burial place for strangers. 8 Therefore, that field has been called [[Akeldama, which means]][fn] the Field of Blood to this day.

9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through [Jeremiah][fn] the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one who was valued, whom they valued from the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”[fn]

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and {the governor}[fn] asked him, saying, “Are you the king of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “You say so.” 12 And while he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 And he did not answer him with regard to [not][fn] even one word, so that the governor greatly marveled.

15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they {wanted}.[fn] 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called [Jesus][fn] Barabbas. 17 {So}[fn] when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you [[of the two]],[fn] [Jesus the][fn] Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over.

19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”

20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to demand Barabbas and to destroy Jesus.

21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said [[to him]],[fn] “Let him be crucified.” 23 [But][fn] {He}[fn] said [[to them]],[fn] “Why, what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Let him be crucified.”

24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this [righteous][fn] one; see to it yourselves.”

25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them, but after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him. 28 And they stripped him and put on him [a purple garment and][fn] a scarlet cloak, 29 and having woven a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail [[the]],[fn] King of the Jews!” 30 And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

32 As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene [[to meet him]][fn] named Simon; they forced him to carry his cross.

33 When they came to a place [called][fn] Golgotha, which is [called][fn] Place of the Skull, 34 [[and]][fn] they offered him {wine}[fn] mixed with gall to drink; but after tasting it, he did not want to drink it. 35 And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots, [[that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots,]]”[fn] 36 and sitting down, they kept watch over him there.

37 They placed above his head the charge against him, written: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

38 Then two robbers[fn] were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 But those passing by were blaspheming[fn] him, shaking their heads 40 saying, “[[Aha!]][fn] You who destroy the temple and build [it][fn] in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, [and][fn] come down from the cross.” 41 [And][fn] Likewise, the chief priests, along with the scribes [and elders,][fn] [[and Pharisees]][fn] were mocking, saying, 42 “He saved others, he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe {in him}.[fn] 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

44 The same was also the case with the robbers who were crucified with him, they were insulting him.

45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell [over the whole land][fn] until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”[fn]

47 Some of those standing there, when they heard it, said [that],[fn] “This one is calling for Elijah.” 48 And immediately one of them ran, and having taken a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the rest said, “Leave it, let us see if Elijah comes to save him.” [[But another, taking a spear, pierced his side, and water and blood came out.]][fn]

50 And Jesus, crying out [again][fn] with a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.[fn]

51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook, and the rocks were split, 52 [and the tombs were opened,][fn] and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

54 Now the centurion and those with him who were keeping watch over Jesus, having seen the earthquake and what had happened, were greatly afraid, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

55 There were many women there, watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him; 56 among whom were [Mary Magdalene, and][fn] Mary the mother of James and {Joseph},[fn] and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

57 When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea came, named Joseph, who also had become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered {it}[fn] to be given.

59 And taking the body, Joseph wrapped it [in][fn] a clean linen cloth 60 and placed it in his new tomb which he had cut out in the rock, and, having rolled a large stone to the door of the tomb, he left. 61 There were Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting opposite the tomb.

62 Now on the next day, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember that this deceiver said while still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore, command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest {his}[fn] disciples come [[by night]][fn] and steal him away and say to the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”

65 [But][fn] Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 And they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone along with the guard.
