Matthew 15

15 Then {Pharisees and scribes}[fn] from Jerusalem come to {Jesus},[fn] saying, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash {when they eat bread with their hands}.”[fn]

3 But he answered [them],[fn] “Why do you also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God {said},[fn] ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.’[fn] 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Gift, whatever you might benefit from me,” he need not honor his father [or his mother].’[fn] 6 Thus you nullify the {word}[fn] of God for the sake of your tradition.

7 “Hypocrites,[fn] Isaiah prophesied well about you, saying, 8 ‘This people [[draws near to me with their mouth and]][fn] honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 But they worship me in vain, teaching doctrines, commandments of men.’ ”[fn]

10 And calling the crowd to him, he said to them, “Listen and understand: 11 {It is not what}[fn] goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”

12 Then {the}[fn] disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”

13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Let {them}[fn] alone; they are blind guides [of the blind].[fn] If a blind person guides a blind person, both will fall into a pit.”

15 But Peter said to him, “Explain {this}[fn] parable to us.”

16 And {he}[fn] said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not understand[fn] that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and is expelled into the latrine? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witnesses, blasphemies.[fn] 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.”

21 And going out from there, Jesus withdrew to the regions of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried out [[to him]],[fn] saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord,[fn] Son of David; my daughter is severely demon-possessed.”

23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and asked him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”

24 But he answered and said, “I was not sent except to {the}[fn] lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25 But she came and worshiped[fn] him, saying, “Lord,[fn] help me.”

26 And he answered and said, “It is not {good}[fn] to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”

27 But she said, “Yes, Lord,[fn] [for][fn] even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.”

28 Then {Jesus}[fn] answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

29 And moving on from there, Jesus came by the Sea of Galilee, and going up on the mountain, he sat down there. 30 And many crowds came to him, having with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, [the mute],[fn] and many others, and they laid them at {his feet},[fn] and he healed them [[all]];[fn] 31 so that the crowd marveled, seeing [the mute [speaking],[fn] [the crippled made whole],[fn] the lame walking, and the blind seeing];[fn] and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 And Jesus, calling his disciples to him, said [to them],[fn] “I have compassion on {the}[fn] crowd because they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry [, lest they faint on the way].”[fn] 33 And {the}[fn] disciples said to him, “Where [[then]][fn] can we get enough bread in the wilderness to satisfy such a large crowd?”

34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have? And they said [[to him]],[fn] Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And he commanded the {crowd}[fn] to sit down on the ground.

36 [[And]][fn] He took the seven loaves and the fish, [and after giving thanks,][fn] he broke them and gave them to {the}[fn] disciples, and the disciples to the {crowds}.[fn] 37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the leftover broken pieces, seven baskets full. 38 And those who ate were [[about]][fn] four thousand men, [apart from women and children].[fn]

39 And after sending the crowds away, he got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
