Matthew 10

10 And calling to himself his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out and to heal every disease and every sickness.

2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew, [Thomas and Matthew the tax collector,][fn] James the son of Alphaeus, and [[Lebbaeus, who was called]] Thaddaeus;[fn] 4 Simon the {Cananaean},[fn] and Judas Iscariot, who [also][fn] betrayed him.

5 Jesus sent out these twelve, instructing them, [saying,][fn] “Do not go on the road to the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans; 6 [but][fn] rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7 “As you go, proclaim this message [that],[fn] ‘The kingdom of the heavens has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, [raise the dead],[fn] cleanse the lepers, cast out demons; freely you have received, freely give.

9 “Do not acquire gold, [or silver,][fn] or copper for your belts, 10 nor a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor {a staff};[fn] for the worker is worthy of his {food}.[fn]

11 “And into whatever city [or village][fn] you enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and stay there until you leave.

12 “As you enter the house, greet it [[saying Peace to this house!]];[fn] 13 [and][fn] if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14 “And whoever does not receive you, nor listen to your words, as you go out of [that house or][fn] city, shake off the dust from your feet.

15 “Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and [[land of]][fn] Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.

16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

17 “But beware of men; for they will deliver you over to councils and in {their}[fn] synagogues they will flog you; 18 and you will be brought before governors [and also kings][fn] for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the nations.

19 “But when they deliver you up, do not be anxious about how or what you should speak; for it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaks in you.

21 “And brother will deliver over brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and put them to death. 22 And you will be hated by all because of my name; but the one who endures to the end, [this one][fn] will be saved.

23 “But when they persecute you in this city, flee to {the other},[fn] [[and if they persecute you in the other, flee to another;]][fn] [for][fn] truly I say to you, you will not finish the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.

24 “A disciple is not above {the}[fn] teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to become like the teacher, and the servant like the master. If they have called the master of the house {Beelzebul},[fn] how much more the members of the household!

26 “So do not fear them; for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim on the rooftops.

28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear the one who can destroy both [[the]][fn] soul and [[the]] body in Gehenna.[fn]

29 “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So do not fear [[them]];[fn] you are worth more than many sparrows.

32 “Therefore, everyone who acknowledges[fn] me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father who is in [the][fn] heavens; 33 but whoever denies me before men, I will also deny them before my Father who is in [the][fn] heavens.

34 “[[Therefore]][fn] Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to divide a {man}[fn] against his father, and daughter against her mother, and a bride against her mother-in-law, 36 And the enemies of the person will be the members of their household.

37 “The one who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and the one who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.

39 [“The one who finds their life will lose it, and the one who loses their life for my sake will find it.][fn]

40 “The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me.

41 “The one who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And {whoever}[fn] gives one of these little ones a cup of cold water [only],[fn] in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.”
