Matthew 14

14 At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, “[[Surely]][fn] This is John the Baptist [[who I beheaded]];[fn] he has been raised from the dead, and [for this reason][fn] these powers are at work in him.”

3 For [[then]][fn] Herod had arrested John, bound [him][fn] [and put him][fn] in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother [Philip];[fn] 4 for John had been saying [to him],[fn] “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 And although he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd because they held him as a prophet.

6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst and pleased Herod, 7 so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8 And she, prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 And the king, being distressed [because of the oaths][fn] and those reclining at the table with him, ordered it to be given, 10 and he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

12 And his disciples came and took {the}[fn] corpse and buried it, and they went and reported to Jesus.

13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself; and when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities. 14 When [{he}[fn] went][fn] ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and healed their sick.

15 When it was evening, {the}[fn] disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late; [[therefore]][fn] send the crowds away so that they may go into the {villages}[fn] [[around]][fn] and buy food for themselves.”

16 But [Jesus][fn] said [to them],[fn] “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 But he said, “Bring them [here][fn] to me.”

19 And having ordered the crowds to recline on the grass, [[and]][fn] taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were [about][fn] five thousand men, apart from women and children.

22 And [immediately][fn] {he}[fn] compelled {the}[fn] disciples to get into the boat and go ahead [of him][fn] to the other side, while he sent the crowds away. 23 And [having sent the crowds away,][fn] he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

24 But the boat was already {many stadia away from the land},[fn] being battered by the waves, for the wind was against it. 25 In the fourth watch of the night, {he came}[fn] to them [walking on the sea].[fn]

26 And when {the disciples}[fn] saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately [Jesus][fn] spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered [him],[fn] “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 And he said, “Come.” And Peter, getting down from the boat, walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But seeing the [strong][fn] wind, he became [[greatly]][fn] afraid [[to come]],[fn] and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus, stretching out his hand, took hold of him and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

32 And when they had climbed into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those [[having come]][fn] [in the boat][fn] worshiped[fn] him, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

34 And crossing over, they came to the land of Gennesaret. 35 And recognizing him, the men of that place sent word to the whole surrounding region and brought to him all those who were suffering. 36 And they were begging [him][fn] that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.
