Matthew 23

23 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat. 3 Therefore, all things that they say [to you][fn] [[to observe]],[fn] do [and observe];[fn] but do not do according to their works; for they say and do not do. 4 {But}[fn] they tie up [[great and]][fn] heavy [and hard to bear][fn] burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

5 “But they do all their works to be seen by men; {for}[fn] they broaden their phylacteries and enlarge the fringes [[of their garments]],[fn] 6 and they love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, 7 and the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi. [[Rabbi.]]’[fn] 8 [But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’][fn] For you have one teacher, [[the Christ]][fn] and you are all brothers.

9 “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one {Father, the heavenly one}.[fn] 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for one is your teacher, the Christ. 11 [But][fn] The greatest [among you][fn] will be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “[But][fn] Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces; for you do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

14 [[“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour the houses of the widows, and for a show make long prayers; for this reason you will receive greater condemnation.]][fn]

15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel over sea and land to make one proselyte, and when it happens, you make him a son of Gehenna[fn] twice as much as yourselves.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17 Fools and blind men! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated.’ 19 [[Fools and]][fn] Blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; 21 and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it; 22 and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who sits upon it.

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith; [but][fn] these things you should have done, without neglecting the others. 24 Blind guides, [those][fn] who strain out the gnat, but swallow the camel.

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence [[and unrighteousness]].[fn] 26 Blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup [[and dish]],[fn] so that the outside [of it][fn] may also become clean.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful to people, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Therefore you testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?[fn] 34 For this reason, behold, I am sending [you][fn] prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, [and some of them you will flog in your synagogues][fn] and persecute from city to city; 35 so that upon you may come [all][fn] the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, [son of Barachiah,][fn] whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you [[that]],[fn] all these things will come upon this generation.

37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her, how often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a bird gathers its young under its wings, and you were not willing. 38 Behold, your house is left to you [desolate].[fn] 39 For I tell you [[that]],[fn] you will not see me from now on until you say, ‘Blessed is the one coming in the name of {the Lord}.[fn]’ ”[fn]
