Matthew 9

9And entering into {a}[fn] boat, {he}[fn] crossed over and came to his own city. 2And behold, they brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed. And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Take courage, child, your sins {are forgiven}.”[fn]

3And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This one blasphemes.” 4And {seeing}[fn] their thoughts, Jesus said [[to them]],[fn] “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5[For][fn] Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – then he says to the paralytic, “Rise, [[and]][fn] take up your bed and go to your house.” 7And rising, he went to his house.

8But when the crowds saw this, they {were filled with fear}[fn] and glorified the God who had given such authority to men.

9And as Jesus passed on [from there],[fn] he saw a man sitting at the tax booth, called Matthew, and said to him, “Follow me.” And rising up, he followed him. 10And [it happened][fn] as he reclined at the table in the house, [and][fn] behold, many tax collectors and sinners [came and][fn] were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11And the Pharisees, having seen this, said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12But {he},[fn] having heard, said [[to them]],[fn] “Those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’[fn] For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners [[to repentance]].”[fn]

14Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast [often],[fn] but your disciples do not fast?”

15And Jesus said to them, “Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? [But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them,][fn] And then they will fast [[in those days]].[fn]

16“No one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away [from the garment],[fn] and a worse tear occurs. 17Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the {wineskins burst},[fn] the wine is {spilled, and the wineskins are ruined}.[fn] But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

18While he was speaking these things to them, behold, a ruler [came and][fn] worshiped[fn] him, saying [that],[fn] “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19And Jesus got up and followed him, and so did his disciples.

20[fn]And behold, a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years approaching from behind, touched the fringe[fn] of his garment; 21for she said to herself, “If [only][fn] I touch his garment, I will be saved.”

22But {Jesus}[fn] {having turned}[fn] and saw her, and said, “Take courage, daughter; your faith has saved you.” And the woman was saved from that hour.

23And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, 24{he said},[fn] “Go away, for the girl has not died, but is sleeping.” And they laughed at him [[knowing that she had died]].[fn] 25But when the crowd had been put out, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26And this report went out into all that land.

27And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed [him],[fn] crying out [and saying],[fn] “Have mercy on us, [[Jesus]][fn] Son of David.” 28{But}[fn] when he had come into the house, the [[two]][fn] blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” 30And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows about this.” 31But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that [whole][fn] land.

32As they were going out, behold, they brought to him [a man][fn] who was mute and demon-possessed. 33And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never has it been seen like this in Israel.” 34[But the Pharisees said, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”][fn]

35And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues [and][fn] proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness [[among the people]][fn] [[and many were following him]].[fn]

36Seeing the crowds, {he}[fn] had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless,[fn] like sheep not having a shepherd.

37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few; 38therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”
