Matthew 22

22 And Jesus, answering [again],[fn] spoke to them in parables, [saying,][fn] 2 “The kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a king, who made a wedding for his son. 3 And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding, and they did not want to come. 4 Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding.” ’ 5 But they disregarded it and went away, one to his own field, another to his business; 6 and the rest seized {his}[fn] servants, mistreated them, and killed them. 7 {But the king was enraged},[fn] and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the crossroads of the streets, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ 10 And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found,[fn] both bad and good; and the {wedding}[fn] was filled with guests.

11 “And the king, having entered to look upon the guests reclining, saw there a man not wearing a wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, [[take him away]][fn] and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel on how to trap him [in his words].[fn] 16 And they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and you do not care about anyone; for you do not look at the face of men. 17 So [tell us then][fn] what you think: is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, “Why do you test me, hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And {he}[fn] said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” 21 They said [to him],[fn] “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “[Therefore,][fn] Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 And when they heard this, they marveled, and leaving him, they went away.

23 On that day Sadducees came [to him][fn] saying there is no resurrection, and they asked him 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If someone dies without having children, his brother shall marry [his wife][fn] and raise up offspring for his brother.’[fn] 25 [Now][fn] There were among us seven brothers; and the first married and died, and not having offspring, he left his wife to his brother; 26 likewise the second and the third, up to the seven. 27 But last [of all],[fn] the woman [[also]][fn] died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose of the seven will she be wife? For they all had her.”

29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God; 30 for in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like angels [[of God]][fn] in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?[fn] {He}[fn] is not the God of the dead but of the living.”

33 And when the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 And one of them [a lawyer][fn] asked him, testing him, [[and saying]][fn] 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 And {he}[fn] said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,’[fn] 38 this is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[fn] 40 On these two commandments depend [all][fn] the Law and the Prophets.”

41 Now when the Pharisees had gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The Son of David.”

43 {He}[fn] said to them, “How then does David, in the Spirit, call him ‘Lord,’ saying, 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, {until I put your enemies under your feet}?” ’[fn] 45 If David [[in the Spirit]][fn] calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask him any longer questions.
