Psalm 80

Psalm

A psalm of Asaph.

1 A Psalm of Asaph God, foreign nations have come into your inheritance;

they have defiled your holy temple;

they have turned Jerusalem into a heap of ruins.

2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants as food to the birds of the skies,

the bodies of your faithful ones to the beasts of the earth.

3 They have shed their blood like water around Jerusalem,

and there was none to bury them.

4 We have become a reproach for our neighbors,

mocking and derision to those who are around us.

5 How long, Yahweh? Will you stay angry forever?

How long will your jealous anger burn like fire?

6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not know you

and on the kingdoms that do not call upon your name.

7 For they have devoured Jacob

and destroyed his villages.

8 Do not hold the sins of our forefathers against us;

may your merciful actions come to us,

for we are very low.

9 Help us, God of our salvation, for the sake of the glory of your name;

save us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.

10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”

May the blood of your servants that was shed

be avenged on the nations before our eyes.

11 May the groans of the prisoners come before you;

with the greatness of your power keep the children of death alive.

12 Pay back into the laps of our neighboring countries seven times as much

as the insults with which they have insulted you, Lord.

13 So we your people and sheep of your pasture

will give you thanks forever.

We will tell your praises to all generations.

1 Pay attention, Shepherd of Israel,

you who lead Joseph like a flock;

you who sit above the cherubim, shine on us!

2 In the sight of Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your power;

come and save us.

3 God, restore us;

make your face shine on us, and we will be saved.

4 Yahweh God of hosts,

how long will you be angry at your people when they pray?

5 You have fed them with the bread of tears

and given them tears to drink in great quantities.

6 You make us something for our neighbors to argue over,

and our enemies laugh about us among themselves.

7 God of hosts, restore us;

make your face shine on us, and we will be saved.

8 You brought a vine out of Egypt;

you drove out nations and transplanted it.

9 You cleared the land for it;

it took root and filled the land.

10 The mountains were covered with its shade,

the cedars of God by its branches.

11 It sent out its branches as far as the sea

and its shoots to the Euphrates River.

12 Why have you broken down its walls

so that all who pass by along the road pluck its fruit?

13 The boars out of the forest ruin it,

and the beasts of the field feed on it.

14 Turn back, God of hosts;

look down from heaven and take notice and take care of this vine.

15 This is the root that your right hand planted,

the shoot that you made to grow.

16 It has been burned and cut down;

they perish because of your rebuke.

17 May your hand be on the man of your right hand,

on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.

18 Then we will not turn away from you;

revive us, and we will call on your name.

19 Yahweh God of hosts, restore us;

make your face shine on us, and we will be saved.
