Psalm 140

140 For the chief musician; psalm David.

1 Rescue me, Yahweh, from an evil man;

from a man of violence preserve me,

2 who plot evil things in the heart;

all the day they travel around, to battles.

3 They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent;

venom of a viper, is under their lips. Selah

4 Guard me, Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked;

from the man of violence preserve me,

who have planned to push down my steps.

5 The proud have hidden a snare for me, and cords;

they have spread out a net to the hand of the path;

traps they have set for me. Selah

6 I have said to Yahweh, “You, are my God.”

Give ear, Yahweh, to the voice of my supplications.

7 Yahweh, Lord, the strength of my salvation,

you have covered my head in the day of weaponry.

8 Do not grant, Yahweh, the desires of the wicked;

do not bring forth his plot, lest they rise up. Selah

9 The head of the ones surrounding me—

let the mischief of their lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall on them;

let him cast them into the fire,

into pits, let them not rise up.

11 Let not a man of tongue be established in the land;

a man of violence—let evil hunt him with blows.

12 I know that Yahweh will do the cause of the poor,

the justice of the needy.

13 Surely the righteous will praise your name;

the upright will dwell before your face.
