Punishment for mistreating prophets

23:29 Punishment for mistreating prophets

(Luke 11:47-51)

29You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you rebuild the prophets’ tombs and adorn the tombs of godly people, 30and you tell yourselves, ‘If we’d lived back in those days, we wouldn’t have had any part in killing the prophets.’ 31By saying that, you’re admitting to yourselves that you’re the descendants of the ones who killed the prophets 32actually you’re just the same as your ancestors. 33[ref]Bunch of snakes, brood of vipers, how do you think that you’ll escape the judgement of hell? 34Because of that, listen, I’m now sending out more prophets and wise preachers and teachers to you all. You’ll kill off some of them and have others executed on stakes. You’ll flog some of them in your meeting halls, and you’ll persecute others from city to city, 35[ref]so that the judgement for all the deaths of godly people around the world will fall on you all. This includes the blood of the innocent Abel all the way through the centuries to the blood of Zechariah (son of Berekiah) who you all murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Yes, I can assure you that all these things will happen to this generation.

47You all won’t end well, because you all build fancy tombs for the prophets that your own ancestors executed. 48Because of that, you’re all actually admitting and agreeing to what your ancestors did, because they killed them and then you build their tombs. 49That’s why God in his wisdom said, ‘I’ll send prophets and missionaries to them, which they will then persecute and kill 50so that the blood of those prophets which was spilt from the creation of the world onwards would then be charged to this generation. 51[ref]This goes all the way back to to the blood of Abel, right up to the blood of Zechariah who was recently killed between the altar and the temple sanctuary. Yes, I’m telling all of you, those crimes will be charged to this generation.
