23:35 The span from Abel (Gen 4:8-11) to Zechariah (2 Chr 24:15-22) follows the order of the Hebrew Bible, in which 2 Chronicles is the last book. The implication is that this generation will be guilty of every murder of the righteous in the Old Testament (cp. Matt 27:25).

Alternate translation: “with the result that” (2) a purpose for which Jesus sends people to the scribes and Pharisees even when he knows that they will kill them. Ζαχαρίου & Βαραχίου

The words Zechariah and Barachiah are the names of men. The man named Zechariah is most likely the one whose murder is described in 2 Chronicles 24:20–22. King Joash had him stoned to death in the temple courtyard after he rebuked the people of Judah for worshipping idols.
