11:51 του ¦ — CT
Key for above GNTs: yellow:punctuation differs, orange:accents differ, red:words differ (from our SR-GNT base).
11:51 from the murder of Abel to the murder of Zechariah: Abel’s murder by his brother Cain was the first murder recorded in the Old Testament (Gen 4:8). The stoning of Zechariah, son of Jehoiada (2 Chr 24:20-22) was the last, since Chronicles is the last book in the Hebrew Bible.
In this section, a Pharisee invited Jesus to his house for a meal. The Pharisee was surprised that Jesus did not ritually wash his hands before he ate. Jesus then criticized the Pharisees because they carefully observed outward rituals but neglected true devotion to God. He specifically warned the Pharisees about three ways in which they displeased God. He then directed three additional warnings to the teachers of the law.
Some other headings for this section are:
Jesus’ Criticism of the Religious Leaders
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 23:1–36 and Mark 12:38–40.
Jesus used the phrase “from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah” in 11:51a to restate more specifically what he meant by the phrase “since the beginning of the world” in 11:50b.
from the blood of Abel
starting from the time Abel’s blood was shed
This period started at the time that Cain murdered Abel
from the blood of Abel: Abel was Adam’s son. Adam’s other son, Cain, murdered Abel. This phrase means “beginning with the time Cain murdered Abel.” This is the first murder recorded in the Bible (Genesis 4:8).
Some other ways to translate this are:
from the murder of Abel (GNT)
beginning with the killing of Abel
to the blood of Zechariah,
up until the time Zechariah’s blood was shed
and continued until the time your ancestors murdered the priest Zechariah.
to the blood of Zechariah: The phrase to the blood of Zechariah means “until the time they murdered Zechariah.” It includes all the time between Abel and Zechariah, and all the righteous people who were murdered or martyred during that time.
It may be helpful to add a footnote that explains why Jesus mentioned Abel and Zechariah. For example:
Abel was the first person murdered in the Old Testament (Genesis 4:8), and Zechariah was the last (2 Chronicles 24:20–22). (The Hebrew Bible orders the book of Chronicles last.) (TRT)
Zechariah: Jesus was probably referring to the man Zechariah who is mentioned in 2 Chronicles 24:20–22. He was a priest who lived long ago and was killed because he declared God’s word.
who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary.
between the altar and the temple house/building.
He was the one who was killed in the area/courtyard between the altar and the temple building.
who was killed: The Greek verb that the BSB translates as who was killed is a passive verb. Some ways to translate this verb are:
As a passive verb. For example:
who was murdered
As a noun. For example:
whose murder/death occurred
As an active verb. For example:
whom your ancestors killed
Translate this in a way that is natural in your language.
between the altar and the sanctuary: The altar refers to the stone altar where worshipers offered burnt offerings. It was located in the courtyard in front of the temple building.
The Greek word that the BSB translates as sanctuary is literally “house.” Here it refers to the temple building itself. Because it was the outer room of the temple (“the Holy Place”) that was closest to the altar, another way to translate this is:
between the altar and the Holy Place (GNT)
See temple, Meaning 2, in the Glossary.
Some other ways to translate this location are:
in the area between the altar and the temple building
in the temple courtyard between the sacrifice altar and the temple building (TRT)
Yes, I tell you, all of it will be charged to this generation.
I assure you(plur) that the people living today will be declared guilty for murdering all of those prophets.
God will certainly punish/judge you(plur) people living today because of all those deaths/killings.
Yes, I tell you: The phrase Yes, I tell you emphasizes what Jesus was about to say. Some other ways to translate this are:
As a phrase before Jesus’ statement. For example:
I mean what I say
I am telling the truth
I assure you
As a word within Jesus’ statement. For example:
You people will certainly be punished for all of this. (CEV)
Translate this emphasis in a way that is most natural in your language.
all of it will be charged to this generation: Jesus repeated here in fewer words what he had already said in 11:50–51. He did this to emphasize that what he was saying was true and important. See the notes on 11:50a.
all of it: Jesus was referring to the murders of all the prophets from the time Cain murdered Abel to the time the people murdered Zechariah.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
αἵματος Ἂβελ & αἵματος Ζαχαρίου
˓the˒_blood ˱of˲_Abel & ˓the˒_blood ˱of˲_Zacharias
Jesus uses the terms the blood of Abel … the blood of Zechariah to refer to the deaths of these men by association with the shedding of their blood. Alternate translation: [the death of Abel … the death of Zechariah]
Note 2 topic: translate-names
Ζαχαρίου
˱of˲_Zacharias
Zechariah is the name of a man. It is not the same man as father of John the Baptist, whose story Luke tells at the beginning of this book. Rather, Jesus means the priest whom King Joash ordered the officials of Judah to stone to death in the temple courtyard after he rebuked the people of Judah for worshipping idols. See [2 Chronicles 24:21](../2ch/24/21.md).
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τοῦ οἴκου
˱of˲_the_‹one› the the house
Jesus calls the temple the house, meaning the “house of God,” since God’s presence was in the temple. Alternate translation: [the temple]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ἐκζητηθήσεται ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης
˱it˲_˓will_be_being˒_sought_out (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἀπό αἵματος Ἂβελ ἕως αἵματος Ζαχαρίου τοῦ ἀπολομένου μεταξύ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καί τοῦ οἴκου Ναί λέγω ὑμῖν ἐκζητηθήσεται ἀπό τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης)
If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [God will hold the people living at this time accountable for all these deaths]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης
¬the generation this
Jesus uses the term generation to mean the people who were born in the current generation. Alternate translation: [the people living at this time]
