Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

11:48 They killed the prophets: See 1 Kgs 19:10, 14; Neh 9:26; Jer 2:30; 26:20-24. Luke portrays Jesus as “The Suffering Prophet” Luke 4:22-24.
In this section, a Pharisee invited Jesus to his house for a meal. The Pharisee was surprised that Jesus did not ritually wash his hands before he ate. Jesus then criticized the Pharisees because they carefully observed outward rituals but neglected true devotion to God. He specifically warned the Pharisees about three ways in which they displeased God. He then directed three additional warnings to the teachers of the law.
Some other headings for this section are:
Jesus’ Criticism of the Religious Leaders
There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 23:1–36 and Mark 12:38–40.
So you are witnesses consenting to the deeds of your fathers:
So by doing this, you(plur) show that you approve of what your ancestors did.
So by honoring the death of the prophets instead of accepting their message, you(plur) show that you agree with what your ancestors did in killing them.
So: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates here as So introduces the conclusion to be drawn from 11:47b–c. Other ways to introduce this conclusion are:
Thus/Therefore
In this way (NJB)
you are witnesses consenting to the deeds of your fathers: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as you are witnesses consenting to the deeds of your fathers is more literally:
you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers (NASB)
Another way to translate this is:
you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did (NIV)
Whether the noun “witnesses” or the verb “testify” is used, this word refers here to their actions, not words that they said. By their actions in building the tombs, the law experts showed that they approved of what their ancestors had done in killing the prophets.
Some other ways to translate this entire clause are:
you show that you approve of what your ancestors did (NCV)
by doing this you prove/show that you agree that what your ancestors did was right
They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
Yes indeed! You(plur) build monuments/tombs to honor the prophets whom your ancestors murdered.
That is to say, they killed the prophets, and you continue their work by decorating the graves of those prophets!
They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs: Luke 11:48b says the same things as 11:47b–c. Jesus was continuing to speak ironically or sarcastically. He was saying that the law experts were continuing the work of their ancestors. They built grave memorials to make it look as if they were honoring the prophets whom their ancestors had murdered. In fact, they continued doing the same things as their ancestors had done—refusing to obey God’s prophets, not believing their words, and persecuting them.
Consider how you might show that Jesus was speaking ironically here.
One possible way to make 11:47–48 clearer is to change the order of some of the phrases and supply some implied information. For example:
47cIt was your ancestors who murdered the prophets, 47band now you build fine monuments to honor those prophets. 48aSo by doing this you show that you approve of what your ancestors did. 48bThat is to say, they killed the prophets and you build the prophets’ tombs! 47aGod will punish you severely for this!
If the meaning still seems unclear to people, you have the following options:
Provide a footnote. For example:
The experts in the law wanted people to think that they were honoring the prophets by building the tombs. But since they did not follow the teaching of the prophets, they proved that they were no better than their ancestors who killed the prophets.
Make your translation even more explicit. For example:
47cIt was your ancestors who did not obey the message of the prophets. Instead, they killed the prophets. 47bNow you build fine monuments to honor those prophets, but you also do not obey their message. 48aSo, by doing that you show that you approve of what your ancestors did. 48bThat is, they killed the prophets and you continue their work by building tombs for those prophets! 47aGod will punish you severely for this!
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
μαρτυρεῖτε καὶ συνευδοκεῖτε τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν
˱you_all˲_˓are˒_testifying (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Ἄρα μαρτυρεῖτε καί συνευδοκεῖτε τοῖς ἔργοις τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν ὅτι αὐτοί μέν ἀπέκτειναν αὐτούς ὑμεῖς δέ οἰκοδομεῖτε)
The implication is that the Pharisees and experts in the law are not really honoring the prophets whom their ancestors killed when they build elaborate tombs for them. Rather, their ancestors began the job by actually killing them, and now they are finishing the job by burying them. Alternate translation: [you show that you approve of and agree with what your ancestors did when you bury the prophets to finish the job of killing them]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations
τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν
˱of˲_the fathers ˱of˲_you_all
Jesus is using the term fathers in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Alternate translation: [your ancestors]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ὑμεῖς & οἰκοδομεῖτε
you_all & ˓are˒_building_‹their_tombs›
The implication is that the Pharisees and law experts are building tombs for the prophets, as [11:47](../11/47.md) says explicitly. Alternate translation: [you are building tombs for them]
