TSNTyndale Study Notes:

19:1-2 Jehu was the son of Hanani, the prophet who had rebuked Asa for his reliance on the Arameans (16:7-9). Jehu now chastised Jehoshaphat for his alliance with Ahab.
• The word love expresses faithfulness to a covenant. Jehoshaphat’s covenant with the wicked Ahab conflicted with his covenant with the Lord.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-names

(Occurrence 0) Hanani, the seer

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to/towards his/its=faces/face Jehu son_of Hanani the,seer and=he/it_said to/towards the=king Jehoshaphat ?,to_the,wicked to,help and,to,hate YHWH love and,in/on/at/with,this against,you severe_anger from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH )

“Hanani” is the name of a man. See how you translated this in 2 Chronicles 16:7.

(Occurrence 0) went out to meet him

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to/towards his/its=faces/face Jehu son_of Hanani the,seer and=he/it_said to/towards the=king Jehoshaphat ?,to_the,wicked to,help and,to,hate YHWH love and,in/on/at/with,this against,you severe_anger from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH )

Here the word “him” refers to Jehoshaphat.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Should you be helping the wicked? Should you be loving those who hate Yahweh?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to/towards his/its=faces/face Jehu son_of Hanani the,seer and=he/it_said to/towards the=king Jehoshaphat ?,to_the,wicked to,help and,to,hate YHWH love and,in/on/at/with,this against,you severe_anger from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH )

These questions expect negative answers to make the point that Jehoshaphat should not have helped Ahab. Alternate translation: “You should not help the wicked! You should not love those who hate Yahweh!”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

(Occurrence 0) the wicked

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to/towards his/its=faces/face Jehu son_of Hanani the,seer and=he/it_said to/towards the=king Jehoshaphat ?,to_the,wicked to,help and,to,hate YHWH love and,in/on/at/with,this against,you severe_anger from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH )

This refers to wicked people in general. Alternate translation: “wicked people”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) anger from Yahweh is on you

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_went_out to/towards his/its=faces/face Jehu son_of Hanani the,seer and=he/it_said to/towards the=king Jehoshaphat ?,to_the,wicked to,help and,to,hate YHWH love and,in/on/at/with,this against,you severe_anger from=to/for=face/front/presence YHWH )

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word anger, you can express the same idea with the word “angry.” This phrase can be expressed in active form. Alternate translation: “Yahweh is angry with you” (See also: figs-activepassive)
