OET (OET-RV) Again, we’re not trying to promote ourselves to you, but we’re giving you all an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can respond to those who take pride in outside appearances rather than in what is in the heart.

ULT We are not again commending ourselves to you, but are giving you an opportunity of boasting on our behalf, so that you may have an answer for the ones boasting in appearance and not in heart.

UST We are not proving to you a second time that we are trustworthy. Rather, we are enabling you to say great things about us. That way, you can respond to anybody who says great things about how people appear on the outside and not about who those people really are on the inside.

BSB We are not commending ourselves to you again. Instead, we are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you can answer those who take pride in appearances rather than in the heart.

5:12 Literally, “in the heart.”

TCNT[fn]For we are not commending ourselves to you again, but we are giving you an opportunity to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearances and not about matters of the heart.

5:12 For we ¦ We CT

T4T Once again I say, as I write this, I am not just trying to make you think well/highly of me, as some people will probably say that I am. Instead, I am telling you in this letter why you have good reason to tell those who criticize me that you think highly of me. I am telling you this so that you will know what to say to those teachers of false doctrine among you. They are proud of what they have done, instead of making sure that they are right with God and being pleased with that.

LEB We are not commending ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to boast about us, in order that you may have an answer for those who boast in appearance and not in heart.

BBE We are not again requesting your approval, but we are giving you the chance of taking pride in us, so that you may be able to give an answer to those whose glory is in seeming, and not in the heart.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

οὐ πάλιν ἑαυτοὺς συνιστάνομεν ὑμῖν, ἀλλὰ ἀφορμὴν διδόντες ὑμῖν καυχήματος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν, ἵνα ἔχητε πρὸς τοὺς ἐν προσώπῳ καυχωμένους, καὶ μὴ ἐν καρδίᾳ

not again ourselves ˱we˲_/are/_commending ˱to˲_you_all but opportunity giving ˱to˲_you_all ˱of˲_boast for us in_order_that ˱you_all˲_/may_be/_having toward the_‹ones› in appearance boasting and not in /the/_heart

If your language would not naturally put the negative statement before the positive statement, you could reverse the order of the elements here. Alternate translation: “We are giving you an opportunity of boasting on our behalf, so that you may have an answer for the ones boasting in appearance and not in heart. It is not that we are again commending ourselves to you”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πάλιν

again

Here, the word again implies that Paul and those with him had already “commended themselves” at some point in the past. Most likely, this happened when they first met the Corinthians. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that makes this more explicit. See how you translated the similar form in 3:1. Alternate translation: “once more” or “again, like we did at first,”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

ἀφορμὴν & καυχήματος

opportunity & ˱of˲_boast

Here Paul uses the possessive form to describe an opportunity that is for boasting. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: “an opportunity for boasting”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν προσώπῳ

in appearance

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of appearance, you could express the idea by using a verb such as “appear” or “look.” Alternate translation: “in what people look like” or “in how things appear”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

μὴ ἐν

not in

This phrase leaves out some words that many languages might need to be complete. If it would be helpful in your language, you could supply these words from earlier in the sentence. Alternate translation: “not boasting in”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἐν καρδίᾳ

in in /the/_heart

In Paul’s culture, the heart is the place where humans think and feel. If it would be helpful in your language, you express the idea by referring to the place where humans think and feel in your culture or by using plain language. Alternate translation: “in who they really are” or “in mind”
