T4T3-6 3-6Even though they were afraid of the people who were already living in that area, they rebuilt the altar at the same place where the previous altar had been. Before they started to lay the foundation of Yahweh’s temple, the priests started to burn sacrifices to Yahweh on the altar. They offered sacrifices every morning and every evening. Fifteen days after they started to offer these sacrifices, the people celebrated the Festival of Living in Temporary Shelters, as Moses had commanded them to do in the laws that God gave to him. Each day the priests offered the sacrifices that were required for that day. In addition, they presented the regular burned offerings and the offerings that were required for the New Moon Festivals and the other festivals that they celebrated each year to honor Yahweh. They also brought other offerings only because they desired to bring them, not because they were required to bring them.

4.. Notandum quod initium quintæ ætatis sicut quatuor præcedentium oblatis Domino holocaustis consecratur. In prima enim protomartyr Abel primus omnium electorum de primogenitis ovium Deo holocaustum obtulit et ingressum nascentis sæculi primo hostiis pecorum, tandem proprio cruore dedicavit. Secundæ ætatis ortum Nœ oblatis Deo holocaustis de his quæ fuerant in arca consecravit. Tertiam ætatem Melchisedech et Abraham hic in pane et vino, ille proprio filio oblato sacrarunt. Quartam ætatem David Domino consecravit, ædificato altari in area Hornæ Jebusæi, et oblatis Deo holocaustis, quibus eum quem populum numerando offenderat placaret; ubi Abraham perhibetur filium obtulisse, et post ædificato a Salomone templo altare holocaustorum constat esse locatum. Quintæ nunc ætatis exordium Josue et Zorobabel ædificato ibidem altari, et oblatis Deo holocaustis, mox excusso captivitatis jugo obtulerunt, et postea jugi holocausto Dominum sibi placaverunt. Hæc omnia in figura præcesserunt ejus qui in sexta ætate hostia suæ carnis totum mundum redemit.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:5-6 The catalog of sacrifices, offered even before the Temple’s foundation was laid, showed the people’s enthusiasm for faithfully worshiping God at every opportunity. They did everything exactly as they were instructed in the law.
• The new moon celebrations took place on the first day of every Hebrew month; the sacrifices and blowing of trumpets reminded the people of God’s covenant with them (Num 10:10; 28:11-15).
• Voluntary offerings were such gifts as money for building the Temple (Exod 35:29; 36:3). The Hebrew term can also refer to peace offerings of meat or bread that were eaten to celebrate fellowship with God (Lev 7:11-21).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-ordinal

מִיּ֤וֹם אֶחָד֙

from,day one(ms)

The Hebrew uses a cardinal number here, one, but there is not a significant difference in meaning between that and the way the Hebrew uses an ordinal number, first, in similar contexts elsewhere. If your language customarily uses ordinals for the numbers of days, you can do that here in your translation. Alternate translation: “Starting on the first day”

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

הֵחֵ֕לּוּ לְהַעֲל֥וֹת עֹל֖וֹת לַיהוָ֑ה וְהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א יֻסָּֽד

began to,offer burnt_offerings to/for=YHWH and,temple YHWH not foundation_~_laid

This sentence draws a contrast between the conditions under which readers would have expected sacrifices to resume and the conditions under which they actually did resume. You could use a connecting phrase such as “even though” between the two clauses to indicate this contrast. Alternate translation: “they resumed offering sacrifices to Yahweh, even though they had not yet rebuilt the temple of Yahweh”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א יֻסָּֽד

and,temple YHWH not foundation_~_laid

If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this with an active form, and you could say who did the action. Alternate translation: “the Jewish leaders had not yet rebuilt the temple of Yahweh”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וְהֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א יֻסָּֽד

and,temple YHWH not foundation_~_laid

This phrase likely means specifically that no one had laid a foundation yet for the new temple. That would have been the first step in construction. However, this seems to be a figurative way of describing the entire process of building the temple by referring to one part of that process, its first step. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could say that explicitly. Alternate translation: “the Jewish leaders had not yet rebuilt the temple of Yahweh”
