TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:8 the great God: This title was a Persian way of referring to an important high deity; it does not indicate that the provincial authorities believed in Israel’s God.
• Following the pattern of Solomon’s Temple (1 Kgs 6:36), after every three rows of prepared stones, a layer of timber was laid in its walls (see Ezra 6:4) to reduce potential damage from earthquakes.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

known it_will_happen to=the=king

These officials address the king in the third person as a sign of respect. If it would be helpful in your language, you could indicate this respect by using an expression such as “O king.” Alternate translation: “We would like you to know, O king”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

known it_will_happen to=the=king

If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this with an active form, and you could say who is doing the action. Alternate translation: “We would like you to know, O king”

went to,Judah province,the

Alternate translation: “we went to the province of Judah”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

to,house the=god great,the

Here, the house refers to the temple. The officials speak of it as if it were a place in which God would live. (They likely say the great God because the Jews told them, as they report in 5:11, that it would be a temple for the God who made heaven and earth.) Alternate translation: “to the temple of the mighty God”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

and=he built stones huge and,timber laid in/on/at/with,walls,the

If it would be helpful in your language, you could say these things with active forms, and you could say who was doing these actions. Alternate translation: “the Jews are building the temple out of large stones and setting timber beams in the walls”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

and,work,the this diligently done and,succeeding in/on/at/with,hands,their

You could say this with an active form, and you could say who was doing the action. The term diligently, used here and several more times in the book, means carefully, exactly, and efficiently. Alternate translation: “And they are doing the work carefully and efficiently and successfully”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

and,succeeding in/on/at/with,hands,their

Here, hand represents control and action. Alternate translation: “and it is succeeding at their initiative” or “and they have been able to advance the work successfully”
