12.31 Principes Juda, etc., id est confessionis vel laudis, perfectiores sunt Ecclesiæ doctores, qui in dedicatione civitatis super murum ascendunt: quia in tempore tribulationis generalem Ecclesiæ conversationem altius vivendo transcendisse probantur. De his enim dicitur: Super muros tuos Jerusalem constitui custodes Isai. 62., etc. Jure ergo qui nunc muris Ecclesiæ tanquam vigiles præsunt, tunc quoque eisdem gloria remunerationis præeminebunt. Et statui duos choros. Vel spurcitiam peccatorum in præsenti de Ecclesia correctius vivendo, et errantes corrigendo expurgent, et in futuro qui corrigi noluerunt, judiciaria potestate de civitate Domini, id est ingressu patriæ cœlestis, expellant. TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:27-43 The dedication of the new wall probably happened shortly after its completion (6:15-19). This account probably came from Nehemiah’s personal memoirs.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-sequential

וָאַעֲלֶה֙

and,brought_~_up

In this context, the conjunction and indicates that the events the story will now describe came after the event it has just described. If it would be helpful in your language, you could show this relationship by using a word such as then.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וָאַעֲלֶה֙ אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מֵעַ֖ל לַחוֹמָ֑ה וָאַעֲמִ֡ידָה שְׁתֵּ֣י תוֹדֹת֩ גְּדוֹלֹ֨ת וְתַהֲלֻכֹ֤ת

and,brought_~_up DOM leaders Yehuda from=under of_the,wall and,appointed, two(fd) choirs great and,went_in_procession

The implication here, which is confirmed in 12:32 and 12:40, is that Nehemiah had these leaders of Judah go up onto the wall so that they could accompany two large groups that would “process” or march around the city on top of the wall while giving thanks to God. They would march in opposite directions and meet up on the far side of the city. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could say something like that explicitly.

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

שְׁתֵּ֣י תוֹדֹת֩ גְּדוֹלֹ֨ת וְתַהֲלֻכֹ֤ת

two(fd) choirs great and,went_in_procession

Having two groups walk on top of the wall in opposite directions all around Jerusalem, while sacred musicians played music was a symbolic way of dedicating the rebuilt wall to God. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could also say that explicitly.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

לַיָּמִין֙ מֵעַ֣ל לַחוֹמָ֔ה לְשַׁ֖עַר הָאַשְׁפֹּֽת

to_the,right from=under of_the,wall to,gate the,dung

Here the book leaves out some of the words that a sentence would ordinarily need in order to be complete. This sentence seems to mean “The first group marched to the right on top of the wall in the direction of the Rubbish Gate.” You could say something like that if it would be helpful to your readers.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לַיָּמִין֙

to_the,right

Here, hand means side. Alternate translation: “turned to their right and marched”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לַיָּמִין֙

to_the,right

Based on the information the book provides, the perspective is of a person facing in towards the city from the top of the wall. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could say that explicitly. Alternate translation: “turned to their right, as they faced the city, and marched”

Note 7 topic: translate-names

לְשַׁ֖עַר הָאַשְׁפֹּֽת

to,gate the,dung

This is the name of one of the gates of Jerusalem. See how you translated it in 2:13 and 3:13–14. Alternate translation: “the Rubbish Gate”
