TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:43 This community celebration included everyone. God was the true source of their great joy because his power had enabled them to accomplish the huge task of rebuilding the walls. Psalm 147 might have been written for this occasion.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-time-simultaneous

בַיּוֹם־הַ֠הוּא

in/on/at/with,day (the)=that

This is a flexible expression that can mean either on that same day or around that time. But since this verse continues to describe the celebrations for the dedication of the wall, here it likely means on that same day.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

כִּ֤י הָאֱלֹהִים֙ שִׂמְּחָם֙ שִׂמְחָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה

that/for/because/then/when the=ʼₑlhīmv made_~_rejoice,them joy great

The abstract noun rejoicing describes how happy the people were as they held this celebration to dedicate the wall. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate the idea behind this word with an adjective such as happy. Alternate translation: “God had made them all very happy”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

וַתִּשָּׁמַ֛ע שִׂמְחַ֥ת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם מֵרָחֽוֹק

and,heard joy Yerushalayim at,far

In this case the abstract noun rejoicing refers to the loud sound that the singers and the people made as they held the ceremony to dedicate the rebuilt wall. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate the idea behind this abstract noun with a concrete noun such as “sound.” Alternate translation: “the sound that the people made as they celebrated in Jerusalem was so loud that even other people who were far away could hear it”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וַתִּשָּׁמַ֛ע שִׂמְחַ֥ת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם מֵרָחֽוֹק

and,heard joy Yerushalayim at,far

If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this with an active form, and you could say who did the action. Alternate translation: “the sound that the people made as they celebrated in Jerusalem was so loud that even other people who were far away could hear it”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

שִׂמְחַ֥ת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם

joy Yerushalayim

Here the story speaks of Jerusalem as if it were a living thing that could celebrate. Alternate translation: “the sound that the people made as they celebrated in Jerusalem”
