BLB YHN Chapter 18

YHN 18 ©

18Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples beyond the winter stream of Kidron, where there was a garden, into which He and His disciples entered. 2Now Judas, who was delivering Him up, also knew the place, because Jesus often gathered together there with His disciples. 3Therefore Judas, having procured the cohort and officers from the chief priests and from the Pharisees, comes there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4Therefore Jesus, knowing all things that are coming upon Him, having gone forth, also said to them, "Whom do you seek?" 5They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." He says to them, "I am He." Now Judas, who is delivering Him up, also had been standing with them. 6Therefore when He said to them, "I am He," they drew toward the back and fell to the ground. 7Therefore He questioned them again, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." 8Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am He. Therefore if you seek Me, allow these to go away," 9so that the word that He had spoken might be fulfilled, "Those whom You have given Me, I have lost none of them, not one." 10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchus. 11Therefore Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath. The cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?" 12Then the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews took hold of Jesus and bound Him. 13And they led Him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest the same year. 14Now Caiaphas was the one having given counsel to the Jews that it is profitable for one man to perish for the people. 15And Simon Peter and the other disciple were following Jesus. Now since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest. 16But Peter stood at the door outside. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter. 17Therefore the servant girl, the doorkeeper, says to Peter, "Are you not also of the disciples of this man?" He says, "I am not." 18Now the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing with them and warming himself. 19Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching. 20Jesus answered him, "I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews always come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 21Why do you question Me? Question those having heard what I spoke to them. Behold, they know what I said." 22Now of His having said these things, one of the officers standing by gave a blow with the palm to Jesus, having said, "Do You answer the high priest this way?" 23Jesus answered him, "If I spoke evil, bear witness concerning the evil; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?" 24Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Therefore they said to him, "Are you not also one of His disciples?" He denied it and said, "I am not." 26One of the servants of the high priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter had cut off, says, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?" 27Then Peter denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed. 28Then they are leading Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the Praetorium, so that they should not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?" 30They answered and said to him, "If He were not doing evil, we would not have delivered Him to you." 31Therefore Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your Law." The Jews said to him, "It is not permitted to us to put anyone to death"-- 32that word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He had spoken signifying what death He was about to die. 33Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and he called Jesus and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" 34Jesus answered, "Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it to you concerning Me?" 35Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests delivered You to me. What have You done?" 36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, My attendants would fight that I might not be betrayed to the Jews. But now My kingdom is not from here." 37Therefore Pilate said to Him, "Then You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I may bear witness to the truth. Everyone being of the truth hears My voice." 38Pilate says to Him, "What is truth?" And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and says to them, "I find no guilt in Him. 39But it is your custom that I should release to you one at the Passover; therefore do you wish I should release to you the King of the Jews?" 40Then they cried out again saying, "Not this one, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
