Peter and Yohan are threatened by the religious leaders

Literal Version

4:1 Peter and Yohan are threatened by the religious leaders

4While Peter and Yohan were still talking to the people, the chief priests and a temple officer and some people from the Sadducee sect approached them 2because they were very upset about what they had been teaching the people, including preaching that Yeshua could give life to the dead. 3So they arrested the two, and as it was already evening, they put them in jail overnight. 4Despite this, many people who had heard their message trusted in Yeshua and the number of families who were believers grew to around 5,000.

5Then the next day, the religious leaders and the elders and the religious teachers gathered together in Yerushalem 6along with those descended from high priests, including Annas the current high priest and Caiafas and Yohan and Alexander. 7After having Peter and Yohan brought in and standing them in the middle, they began to ask, “Under what authority did you do this?”

8Then Peter, having been filled with the holy spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we’re being questioned today about a good deed done to a man who couldn’t walk and which resulted in his healing, 10then you all need to know, and the people of Israel should also know, that it was done under the authority and name of Yeshua the messiah. He was the man from Nazareth that you executed on a pole, but who God brought back to life. It was because of his authority that this man can now stand before you without deformity. 11[ref]This Yeshua is:

‘the stone which was rejected by you builders,

has now become the vital cornerstone.’

12We can’t be saved by anyone else, because there’s no other name or authority that’s been given in the entire world under which people can be saved.

13The assembled leaders were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and Yohan who they knew to be illiterate, working-class men Then they recognised that they had been with Yeshua, 14but since the man who was no longer deformed was standing there with them, there was nothing that they could really accuse them of. 15So they had them removed from the room, and they asked each other, 16“What should we do with these fellows? By now everyone in Yerushalem has heard about the miracle they did, and we have no way to rebuff it. 17However, we have to stop it spreading even further, so maybe we should ban them from speaking about this name to anyone.” 18So they called them back in and decreed that they weren’t allowed to preach or teach under the name of Yeshua anymore.

19But Peter and Yohan answered, “You judge for yourselves whether it’s right in God’s eyes to listen to you rather than to him? 20As for us, we’re not able to be silent about what we saw and heard.” 21So after making some further threats, the leaders sent them off. They hadn’t been able to find anything to punish them for, because the people were all praising God for what had happened 22and because the man who had miraculously recovered was over forty years old.

4And of_them speaking to the people, the chief_priests, and the officer of_the temple, and the Saddoukaios_sect approached to_them, 2being_thoroughly_disturbing because_of the thing them to_be_teaching to_the people, and to_be_proclaiming the resurrection in the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa), which is from the_dead.
3And they_laid_ their _on on_them hands, and they_put them in jail to the_ next _day, because/for it_was already evening.
4But many the ones having_heard the message, believed and number of_the men was_become about five thousands.
5And it_became on the_ next _day the rulers of_them, and the elders, and the scribes to_be_gathered_together in Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim), 6and Annas the chief_priest, and Kaiafas, and Yōannaʸs, and Alexandros, and as_many_as were of chief_priestly descent.
7And having_stood them in the midst, they_were_inquiring:
In what power or in what name you_all did this?
8Then Petros having_been_filled with_the_ holy _spirit, said to them:
Rulers of_the people and elders,
9if we today are_being_examined on a_good_work to_the_ sick _man, by what this one has_been_healed, 10it_let_be known to_all you_all and to_all the people of_Israaʸl/(Yisrāʼēl), that in the name of_Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah the from_Nazaret, whom you_all executed_on_a_stake, whom the god raised from the_dead, by this name this man has_stood_by before you_all healthy.
11This one is the stone which having_been_scorned by you_all, the builders, which having_become to the_head of_the_corner.
12And not_one the is not in other salvation, because/for there_is not another name under the heaven which having_been_given among people, by which it_is_fitting us to_be_saved.
13And observing the boldness of_ the _Petros and of_Yōannaʸs, and having_grasped that they_are illiterate and ordinary men, they_were_marvelling, and they_were_recognizing them that they_were with the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa).
14And seeing the man having_stood with them, the one having_been_healed, they_were_having nothing to_speak_against them.
15But having_commanded them to_go_away outside the council, they_were_conferring with one_another 16saying:
What we_may_do to_ the these _men?
For/Because indeed that has_become a_known sign through them, to_all the ones dwelling_in Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) is manifest, and we_are_ not _being_able to_be_disowning it.
17But in_order_that may_ not _be_spread on more among the people, we_may_threaten to_them to_ no_longer _be_speaking in the this name to_no_one of_the_people.
18And having_called them, they_commanded them not to_be_speaking nor to_be_teaching in the name of_ the _Yaʸsous at_all.
19But the Petros and Yōannaʸs answering said to them:
Judge whether it_is right before the god, to_be_hearing from_you_all rather than the from_god.
20For/Because we are_ not _being_able to_be_ not _speaking what we_saw and we_heard.
21And they having_further_threatened them sent_ them _away, finding nothing which how they_may_punish them, because_of the people, because all were_glorifying the god for the thing having_become.
22For/Because the man on whom this the sign of_the healing had_become was more years than forty.
