TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-22 Persecution was a common experience of God’s people throughout the Bible. God’s servants often faced hostility and opposition (Deut 30:7; 1 Kgs 18:13; Neh 4:1-3; Jer 37–38; Matt 23:34-37; Luke 11:49-51; 1 Thes 2:14-15). Jesus himself was persecuted (Luke 4:29; John 5:16), and he told his disciples to expect the same kind of treatment (Matt 10:23; 24:9; Mark 13:9; Luke 21:12; John 16:2), but he promised that the Holy Spirit would provide strength (Acts 1:8; Luke 12:11-12; 21:15). Acts records frequent times of persecution (Acts 4:3; 5:17-41; 7:54–8:3; 9:1-2; 11:19; 12:2; 13:50; 14:19; 16:19-24), but Acts also reiterates that the Holy Spirit empowers disciples to bear witness in such circumstances (2:44; 4:8-13; 6:10; 7:55). The boldness of Peter and John before the hostile high council exemplifies facing persecution with courage and power (4:20).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ ἡ σωτηρία

not is in other not_one the salvation

In Greek this is a double negative for emphasis, “there is no salvation in no one else.” The second negative does not cancel the first to create a positive meaning. If for emphasis your language uses double negatives that do not cancel one another, it would be appropriate to use that construction here. You could also state the meaning positively. Alternate translation: “he is the only one in whom there is salvation”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ ἡ σωτηρία

not is in other not_one the salvation

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word salvation, you could express the same idea with a verb such as “save.” Alternate translation: “he is the only one who is able to save”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὐδὲ & ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸ δεδομένον

not & name ˱there˲_is another under ¬the heaven ¬which /having_been/_given

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “God has not given any other name under heaven”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

οὐδὲ & ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον & ἐν ᾧ δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς

not & name ˱there˲_is another & among (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ ἡ σωτηρία οὐδὲ γὰρ ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸ δεδομένον ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐν ᾧ δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς)

Here, name represents a person by association with the way that each person has a name. Alternate translation: “there is no other person … by whom we must be saved”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν

under ¬the heaven

This is an idiom. See how you translated it in 2:5. Alternate translation: “on earth”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

ἐν ἀνθρώποις

in among people

Peter is using the term men in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Alternate translation: “among people” or “to people”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐν ᾧ δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς

in among by which ˱it˲_/is/_fitting /to_be/_saved us

If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this with an active form. Alternate translation: “that can save us” or, if you translate “name” as “person,” “who can save us”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμᾶς

us

Peter is using the word we to refer to himself and his listeners, so use the inclusive form of that word if your language marks that distinction.
