Shelomoh’s address to the people

1Ki 8:14–21

2Ch 6:3–11

8:14 Shelomoh’s address to the people

(2 Chr. 6:3-11)

14Then while all the people stood there, the king turned around and pronounced a blessing on all Israel, 15saying, “Blessed is Yahweh, the God of Israel, who spoke audibly to my father David, and then put into action the promise he’d given, 16‘From the day when I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I didn’t choose a city from among all the tribes of Israel to build a house in so that my name would be established there. Instead I chose David to lead my people Israel.’ ”[ref]

17Shelomoh continued, “My father David wanted to build a temple to confirm Yahweh’s power and authority here.[ref] 18However, Yahweh told him that it was good that he wanted to build a temple for him, 19however he wouldn’t be the one to build it, because it would be his biological son who would do it.[ref]

20Now Yahweh has put his promise into action, and I’m here now having succeeded my father David—sitting on Israel’s throne just as Yahweh said, and I’ve been the one to build the residence for Israel’s God Yahweh. 21I’ve included a place for the box containing the two stone tablets with the agreement that Yahweh made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt.”

2Sam 7:4-11:

4But that night, Yahweh spoke to Natan, 5“Go and tell my servant David that Yahweh says, ‘Will you build a house for me to live in? 6I haven’t lived in a house since I brought the Israelis out of Egypt right up until now, but rather I was living in a tent as they moved around. 7In all those places, I never once queried the leaders to ask why they never built a cedar house for me.’

8But now you should tell my servant David that commander Yahweh says, ‘I myself took you out of the grass field where you looked after the sheep and goats to become the leader of my people the Israelis. 9Everywhere you’ve gone, I’ve been with you and destroyed your enemies in front of you, and I will make you famous like all the famous people on the earth. 10I will establish a place for the Israelis and put them there to live, and they won’t be afraid because evil people won’t continue to oppress them like happened in the past 11when I appointed heroes (traditionally ‘judges’) over my people Israel. I will give you peace from all your enemies, and I, Yahweh, will enable your descendants to rule after you.

3“Go and do whatever you consider best,” Natan replied, “because Yahweh is with you.”
