TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:1-27 The larger section (13:1–17:27) concludes with Nathan’s prophecy about David and David’s prayer of thanks.

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

The Promise of Dynasty

God promised David that his dynasty would last forever (2 Sam 7:11-16 // 1 Chr 17:9-14). Yet the Chronicler lived at a time when David’s dynasty had apparently ended. Although David’s line of descent continued (see 1 Chr 3:1-24), no descendant of David had been king since the exile of Judah to Babylon over 150 years earlier. As a result, Israel’s hope for the future was in question. The Chronicler wanted to show that God’s promise to David was unconditional and that his throne was indeed “secure forever.” Even the possibility of exile does not remove the hope of God’s promise of a dynasty. The promise would continue for a future time because a future descendant of David would inherit the throne (17:11).

The Chronicler’s hope was not directly “messianic” in the strict sense—he was not primarily focused on the arising of an anointed deliverer. His continuing hope was that the covenant community would again be led by kings descended from David. The Chronicler encouraged the community to look to the future for a new king to improve Israel’s condition.

With the birth of Jesus, the Son of David, the Chronicler’s hope for the community of Israel was finally realized. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Chronicler’s expectation of a new king (see Matt 1:1-17). His Kingdom is for all the nations (Isa 49:6), stretching “from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth” (Zech 9:10).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

The words “your” and “you” in this verse refers to David.

Yahweh continues describing his promises to King David through the prophet Nathan.

After the people of Israel entered the land of Canaan and before they had kings to rule them, God appointed leaders called “judges” to lead them in times of trouble.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

To be in authority is referred to as being over someone. Alternate translation: “to rule my people Israel”

(Occurrence 0) subdue

(Some words not found in UHB: and,to/for,from,day which/who appointed judges on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in people,my Yisrael and,subdue DOM all/each/any/every enemies,your and,declare to/for=you(fs) and,house build for,you YHWH )

Here the metonym “house” refers to David’s ancestors continuing on as the rulers of Israel. In 1 Chronicles 17:4 God told David he would not be the one to build a house for Yahweh. There “house” represented a temple. If your language has a word that can express both ideas, use it here and in 17:4.
