5.24 Quorumdam hominum peccata, etc. Quia dixerat sine præjudicio nihil faciendum, determinat ubi præjudicium sit necessarium, et ubi non, dividens bona et mala, in manifesta et occulta, quasi dicat: ideo opus est examinatione, quia sicut quædam sunt manifesta, quæ non oportet examinari, ita quædam sunt occulta, de quibus sine præexaminatione non potest fieri præjudicium. Manifestata. Hoc dicit de iis, de quibus clarum est quo animo fiant, hæc præcedunt ad judicium, quia si ista sequitur judicium, non est temerarium. Subsequuntur. Sicut quæ occulta sunt mala ipsa non latebunt tempore suo quando Christi tempus advenerit, quo manifestentur: sic et de bonis. De his ergo judicemus: illa Dei judicio relinquantur.


5.24 Quorumdam hominum peccata, etc. Quia dixerat without præyudicio nihil faciendum, determinat ubi præyudicium sit necessarium, and ubi non, dividens good and mala, in manifesta and occulta, as_if dicat: ideo opus it_is examinatione, because like quædam are manifesta, which not/no oportet examinari, ita quædam are occulta, about to_whom without præexaminatione not/no potest fieri præyudicium. 5:17-25 Elders: As in Judaism, community leaders (see also 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9) were usually older men who were leaders in the wider community. The letters to Timothy and Titus recognize an office of elders, as here (see also 1 Tim 4:14; Titus 1:5), but the word is also used generally for older men in the community (as in 1 Tim 5:1).

Although the term men is masculine, Paul is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that makes this clear. Alternate translation: “of some men and women”

προάγουσαι εἰς κρίσιν, τισὶν δὲ καὶ ἐπακολουθοῦσιν

Here Paul speaks of sins as if they were people who could be going ahead of or who could follow those who sinned into the place where judgment happens. He means that everyone knows that some people are guilty before they experience judgment, but with other people no one knows that they are guilty before they experience judgment. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “being obvious before judgment, but also they are not obvious for some” or “showing that they are guilty before judgment, but also some people’s sins are hidden until judgment”

Here, the word judgment could refer to: (1) how God will judge everyone when Jesus comes back. Alternate translation: “into the final judgment” or “God’s judgment” (2) how the church or its leaders will judge people who are sinning. Alternate translation: “into the church’s judgment” or “into the judgment of the church leaders”

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of judgment, you could express the same idea in another way. Make sure that your translation fits with the option you chose in the previous verse. Alternate translation: “to when they are judged”
