ULT This is what Yahweh says:
⇔ “As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion
 ⇔ two legs only, or a piece of an ear;
⇔ so will the sons of Israel who live in Samaria be rescued with only the corner of a couch or a piece of a bed.”

UST Yahweh has declared this:
 ⇔ “When a lion attacks a sheep,
⇔ sometimes a shepherd is able to snatch from the lion’s mouth
⇔ only two legs or an ear of the sheep.
⇔ Similarly, only a few people from Samaria will escape,
⇔ just as if someone could save only a part of a couch or a bed from a fire in the house.”

BSB § This is what the LORD says:
⇔ “As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion
⇔ two legs or a piece of an ear,
⇔ so the Israelites dwelling in Samaria will be rescued
⇔ having just the corner of a bed
⇔ or the cushion of a couch.[fn]

3:12 Or so will the Israelites be snatched away, those who sit in Samaria on the edge of their beds and in Damascus on their couches

OEB  ⇔ The Lord says:
⇔ Just as a shepherd rescues from the jaws of a lion
⇔ two shinbones or a piece of an ear,
⇔ so the Israelites living in Sameria will be rescued –
⇔ with the corner of a couch,
⇔ and the damask of a divan!

WEB Yahweh says:
⇔ “As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs,
⇔ or a piece of an ear,
⇔ so shall the children of Israel be rescued who sit in Samaria on the corner of a couch,
⇔ and on the silken cushions of a bed.”

WMB The LORD says:
⇔ “As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs,
⇔ or a piece of an ear,
⇔ so shall the children of Israel be rescued who sit in Samaria on the corner of a couch,
⇔ and on the silken cushions of a bed.”

NET This is what the Lord says:
⇔ “Just as a shepherd salvages from the lion’s mouth a couple of leg bones or a piece of an ear,
⇔ so the Israelites who live in Samaria will be salvaged.
⇔ They will be left with just a corner of a bed,
 ⇔ and a part of a couch.”

LSV Thus said YHWH: “As the shepherd delivers from the lion’s mouth
Two legs, or a piece of an ear,
So the sons of Israel are delivered,
Who are sitting in Samaria on the corner of a bed,
And in Damascus [on that of] a couch.

FBV This is what the Lord says: Just as a shepherd tries to rescue a sheep from a lion's mouth, but only saves a couple of legs or a piece of an ear, so it will be for the people of Israel living in Samaria—all that will be “saved” will be the corner of a couch and a piece of a leg from a bed.[fn]

3:12 The point being made here is not how little is saved, but nothing is saved except proof of total destruction. A shepherd took the remains of a sheep to the owner to prove how the animal died; otherwise he would have to pay for it himself. Similarly with Israel, it's destruction would be so complete that the only evidence left would only confirm this.

T4T Yahweh has declared this:
 ⇔ “When a lion attacks a sheep,
⇔ sometimes a shepherd will be able to snatch from the lion’s mouth
⇔ only two legs or an ear of the sheep.
⇔ Similarly, only a few people from Samaria will escape,
⇔ and they will be able to rescue only a part of a couch and a part of a bed.”

LEB Thus says Yahweh, “Just as the shepherd rescues two legs or a piece of an ear from the mouth of the lion, so shall the people[fn] of Israel who dwell in Samaria, with the corner of a couch and the damask of a bed.”

?:? Literally “children”

BBE These are the words of the Lord: As the keeper of sheep takes out of the mouth of the lion two legs or part of an ear; so will the children of Israel be made safe, who are resting in Samaria on seats of honour or on the silk cushions of a bed.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:12 A shepherd who tries to rescue: The people of both Israel and Judah believed that, because of their chosen status, God would intervene to rescue them and never let them perish. The prophet’s words are ironic: Their rescue would be like a shepherd who arrives too late to save the sheep, and who can pull only two legs or a piece of an ear from the mouth of the lion.
• So it will be . . . reclining on couches: Some have interpreted this statement to mean that only the fabric of a few couches would survive the Assyrian siege of Samaria. Accordingly, the last two lines of this verse could be translated So it will be when the Israelites in Samaria are rescued / with only a broken bed and a tattered pillow.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / simile

(Occurrence 0) As the shepherd rescues … so will the people of Israel … be rescued

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH just=as rescues the,shepherd from,mouth the,lion's two(fd) legs or piece ear yes/correct/thus/so rescued sons_of Yisrael the,live in/on/at/with,Samaria in/on/at/with,corner bed and,in/on/at/with,cushion couch )

The Lord compares the people of Israel being rescued with an unsuccessful attempt to rescue an animal from a lion. They will not be completely rescued.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs only, or a piece of an ear

It can be stated clearly that the shepherd tries to rescue the whole animal. Alternate translation: “As the shepherd tries to rescue an animal from the lion’s mouth, but is able to save only two legs or a piece of an ear”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

(Occurrence 0) As the shepherd … the lion

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH just=as rescues the,shepherd from,mouth the,lion's two(fd) legs or piece ear yes/correct/thus/so rescued sons_of Yisrael the,live in/on/at/with,Samaria in/on/at/with,corner bed and,in/on/at/with,cushion couch )

Here the phrases “the shepherd” and “the lion” refer to any shepherd or lion. Alternate translation: “As a shepherd … a lion”

(Occurrence 0) they will be left with only the corner of a couch or a piece of a bed

This phrase shows that they will not be completely rescued. Almost all of their possessions will be stolen. This passage in Hebrew is difficult to understand, and some modern versions interpret it differently.

(Occurrence 0) couch

(Some words not found in UHB: thus he/it_had_said YHWH just=as rescues the,shepherd from,mouth the,lion's two(fd) legs or piece ear yes/correct/thus/so rescued sons_of Yisrael the,live in/on/at/with,Samaria in/on/at/with,corner bed and,in/on/at/with,cushion couch )

This is a soft chair big enough to lie down on.
