TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:19 Nineveh deserved destruction rather than healing. Although God had been patient with Nineveh in Jonah’s day (Jon 3:10), the Assyrians had returned to cruelty and would reap the harvest of their own evil (see Prov 11:16-19; Isa 66:5-6; Hos 8:7). Those who had suffered under Assyria’s cruelty would welcome this message with joy.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) No healing is possible for your wounds. Your wounds are severe

(Some words not found in UHB: not remedy for, wound, your fatal wound, your all hear news, you clap hands over, you that/for/because/then/when on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in who? not escaped cruelty, your endless )

Nahum speaks of the certainty of the destruction of Nineveh and the defeat of its king as if the king had suffered an incurable wound.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) No healing is possible for your wounds

(Some words not found in UHB: not remedy for, wound, your fatal wound, your all hear news, you clap hands over, you that/for/because/then/when on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in who? not escaped cruelty, your endless )

The word “healing” can be translated with a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: “No one is able to heal your wounds”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Who has escaped your constant wickedness?

(Some words not found in UHB: not remedy for, wound, your fatal wound, your all hear news, you clap hands over, you that/for/because/then/when on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in who? not escaped cruelty, your endless )

This rhetorical question emphasizes the negative answer that it anticipates. All of the nations that were near Assyria had suffered because of Assyria’s constant wickedness. Alternate translation: “No one has escaped your constant wickedness.”
