TSNTyndale Study Notes:

51:4 Against . . . you alone: This is hyperbole—the psalmist knows he also sinned against human beings (2 Sam 11:2-4, 15-17), but his offense against God is more important. He expects God to rebuke him and will accept whatever verdict God renders (see Rom 3:4).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

what is evil in your sight

(Some words not found in UHB: thoroughly wash,me from,iniquity,my and,from,sin,my cleanse,me )

The word “sight” here represents judgment. Yahweh saw and did not approve of David’s actions. Alternate translation: “what you judge to be evil” or “what you consider to be evil”
