ULT And Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “By this will I cut for you, by gouging out for you every right eye. And I will set it as a disgrace against all Israel.”

UST Nahash replied, “I will do that if you do one thing. Allow us to gouge out all the right eyes of your people. By doing that we will cause the people in other countries to despise all you Israelite people.”

11.2 Et respondit. Bellum Naas, bellum hæreticorum contra Ecclesiam significat. Naas interpretatur serpens, Ammon comprimens vel coangustans, vel populus mœroris. Jabes exsiccata; Galaad acervus testimonii; Naas ergo significat serpentem antiquum, qui est princeps Ammonitarum, id est hæreticorum. Hic est enim populus mœroris, qui non habet gaudium Spiritus sancti, qui disponit fœdus cum populo Ecclesiæ, ut eruat oculos dextros, visum scilicet sanæ orthodoxæ fidei. Sinistrum relinquit oculum, ut scilicet prava tantum sentiat. Sed mens fidelium exsiccata a sorde vitiorum, acervum testimonii, id est, scientias sanctæ Scripturæ congerit, quibus viriliter resistat hosti.

BRN And Naas the Ammanite said to them, On these terms will I make a covenant with you, that I should [fn]put out all your right eyes, and I will lay a reproach upon Israel.

11:2 gouge out the right eye: Mutilation of captured soldiers was a common practice in the ancient Near East. These disfigured soldiers would have lost all depth perception, seriously curtailing their potential for fighting in a revolt.
