ULT But I will pour out a spirit of compassion and pleading on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so they will look on me, the one they have pierced. They will mourn for me, as one mourns for an only son; they will bitterly lament for him like those who lament the death of a firstborn son.

UST “I, Yahweh, will cause the descendants of David to have mercy on others, and to beg me to have mercy on themselves. They will gaze at me, whom they pierced.” They will cry bitterly, as people cry for a firstborn son, an only son, who has died.

BSB § Then I will pour out on the house of David and on the people of Jerusalem a spirit [fn] of grace and prayer, and they will look on Me,[fn] the One they have pierced.[fn] They will mourn for Him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for Him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

MSG(10-14)“Next I’ll deal with the family of David and those who live in Jerusalem. I’ll pour a spirit of grace and prayer over them. They’ll then be able to recognize me as the One they so grievously wounded—that piercing spear-thrust! And they’ll weep—oh, how they’ll weep! Deep mourning as of a parent grieving the loss of the firstborn child. The lamentation in Jerusalem that day will be massive, as famous as the lamentation over Hadad-Rimmon on the fields of Megiddo:
  Everyone will weep and grieve,
the land and everyone in it:
  The family of David off by itself
and their women off by themselves;
  The family of Nathan off by itself
and their women off by themselves;
  The family of Levi off by itself
and their women off by themselves;
  The family of Shimei off by itself
and their women off by themselves;
  And all the rest of the families off by themselves
and their women off by themselves.”

And they have been in bitterness for Him,
Like a bitterness over the firstborn.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:10 pour out: This word describes the outpouring of God’s spirit of prophecy upon Israel and all people on the day of the Lord (cp. Ezek 39:28-29; Joel 2:28-29) and God’s judgment upon the wicked (Lam 2:4; Hos 5:10; Zeph 3:8).
• a spirit of grace: God’s unmerited and unsought favor persuades God’s people to seek him in contrite and repentant prayer (see Ps 86:15-16).
• me whom they have pierced: The New Testament understands the piercing of God as a reference to the piercing of the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth (John 19:34-37; Rev 1:7).
