OET (OET-RV)Whenever you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray in the meeting halls and on street corners so everyone will notice them. I can assure you that they’ve already received their reward in full.

ULTAnd when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray, having stood in the synagogues and on the corners of the street, so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

USTWhenever some people pray to God, they enjoy doing so while standing in the Jewish meeting places and on the street corners. They pretend to focus on praying, but they just want other people to recognize them. God will not reward them any more than that. What I have said is true. So, you should not behave like that.

BSB  § And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.

BLBAnd when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets so that they might be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their recompense.

T4TAlso when you pray, do not do what the hypocrites do. They like to stand in the Jewish meeting places and on the corners of the main streets to pray, in order that other people will see them and think highly of them. Keep this in mind: People praise them, but that is the only reward they will get.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:5 When you pray: Jews prayed regularly at 9 am and 3 pm (see Acts 3:1) and had frequent times of public prayer. Hypocrites deliberately sought to be in public places at such times, to be seen by all.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / you

προσεύχῃ, οὐκ ἔσεσθε

˱you˲_/may_be/_praying not ˱you_all˲_will_be

Even though Jesus is speaking to many disciples, he is addressing an individual situation, so you is singular throughout this sentence (the word you in the second sentence is plural). But if the singular form would not be natural in your language for someone who is speaking to a group of people, you could use the plural form of you in your translation.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

φιλοῦσιν & ἑστῶτες προσεύχεσθαι

˱they˲_/are/_loving & /having/_stood /to_be/_praying

Here Jesus that they love to pray in public places, not simply that they love to pray in general. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “they love to pray publicly, for example standing”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς καὶ ἐν ταῖς γωνίαις τῶν πλατειῶν

in the synagogues and on the corners ˱of˲_the roads

These locations were public places where many people would hear the prayers. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “in public areas like synagogues and the corners of the streets”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

φανῶσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις

˱they˲_/may_be/_seen ˱by˲_the people

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “men may see them”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

φανῶσιν

˱they˲_/may_be/_seen

Here Jesus implies not only that these people want to be seen but also that they want to be honored or praised. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “they may be seen and honored” or “they may be seen and praised”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

τοῖς ἀνθρώποις

˱by˲_the people

Although the term men is masculine, Jesus is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that makes this clear. Alternate translation: “men and women” or “people”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀπέχουσι τὸν μισθὸν αὐτῶν

˱they˲_/are/_receiving_fully the reward ˱of˲_them

Here Jesus means that they have received their entire reward from men, and God will not reward them any further. See how you translated this clause in 6:2. Alternate translation: “they have already received all the reward they will get” or “God will not give them any reward beyond that”
