ULT NUM Chapter 22

NUM 22 ©

22And the sons of Israel set out, and they camped in the plains of Moab, from across to Jordan at Jericho.

2And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorite. 3And Moab was very afraid from the face of the people, because it was many. And Moab felt dread from the face of the sons of Israel. 4And Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now the assembly will lick up all around us, as the ox licks up the greenery of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was the king of Moab at that time. 5And he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is on the River, the land of the sons of his people, to call for him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out from Egypt. Behold, it has covered the eye of the land, and it is dwelling in front of me. 6And now, please come, curse this people for me, for it is mightier than I. Perhaps I will be able to strike against it, and I will drive it out from the land. For I know that whom you bless is blessed, and whom you curse is cursed.”

7And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went, and divinations were in their hand. And they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will return to you a word, just as Yahweh speaks to me.” And the princes of Moab dwelled with Balaam.

9And God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”

10And Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab, sent to me, 11‘Behold, the people coming out from Egypt, and it has covered the eye of the land. Now come, curse it for me. Perhaps I will be able to fight against it and drive it out.’ ”

12And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them. You shall not curse the people, for it is blessed.”

13And Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go to your land, for Yahweh has refused to give me to go with you.”

14And the princes of Moab rose and came to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”

15And Balak added again to send princes, more numerous and more honored than these. 16And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor, ‘Please, do not be withheld from coming to me, 17for honoring, I will honor you greatly, and all that you say to me I will do. And please come, curse this people for me.’ ”

18And Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “If Balak gives to me the fullness of his house, silver and gold, I will not be able to pass over the mouth of Yahweh my God, to do small or great. 19And now, please, you also dwell in this tonight, and I will know what Yahweh will add to speak with me.”

20And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men have come to call for you, rise, go with them. But only the word that I speak to you, it you shall do.”

21And Balaam rose in the morning and saddled his female donkey, and he went with the princes of Moab. 22And the nose of God burned because he was going. And the angel of Yahweh stationed himself in the way for an adversary to him. And he was riding on his female donkey, and two of his young men were with him. 23And the female donkey saw the angel of Yahweh being stationed in the way, and his sword being drawn in his hand. And the female donkey turned aside from the way and went into the field. And Balaam struck the female donkey to turn her aside to the way. 24And the angel of Yahweh stood in the narrow path of the vineyards, a wall from this and a wall from that. 25And the female donkey saw the angel of Yahweh, and she pressed herself against the wall. And she pressed the foot of Balaam against the wall, and he added to strike her. 26And the angel of Yahweh added to pass over, and he stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn aside right or left. 27And the female donkey saw the angel of Yahweh and lay down under Balaam. And the nose of Balaam burned, and he struck the female donkey with the staff. 28And Yahweh opened the mouth of the female donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

29And Balaam said to the female donkey, “Because you have abused me! If only there were a sword in my hand, for I would kill you now!”

30And the female donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your female donkey on which you have ridden from since you were until this day? Being accustomed, have I been accustomed to do thus to you?”

And he said, “No.”

31And Yahweh uncovered the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh being stationed in the way and his sword being drawn in his hand. And he bowed and prostrated himself to his nostrils. 32And the angel of Yahweh said to him, “Why have you struck your female donkey these three times? Behold, I, I have come out for an adversary, for the way is precipitous in front of me. 33And the female donkey saw me and turned aside to my face these three times. Unless she turned aside from my face, then now I would have killed also you and kept her alive.”

34And Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you were being stationed to meet me in the way. And now, if it is evil in your eyes, let me return for myself.”

35And the angel of Yahweh said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but only the word that I speak to you, it you shall speak.” And Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

36And Balak heard that Balaam came, and he went out to meet him to the city of Moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is at the end of the border. 37And Balak said to Balaam, “Sending, did I not send to you to call for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I truly not able to honor you?”

38And Balaam said to Balak, “Behold, I have come to you. Now, being able, am I able to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, it I will speak.”

39And Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kiriath Huzoth. 40And Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep and sent to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.

41And it happened in the morning that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth Baal, and he saw from there the end of the people.
