22:21-41 The passage is clearly making fun of this professional seer, whose spiritual insights and obedience to God are not equal to those of his donkey.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) Then Yahweh opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: and,opened YHWH DOM both_eyes_of Bilˊām and=he/it_saw DOM angel YHWH standing in/on/at/with,road and,sword,his drawn in=his/its=hand and,bowed_down and,falling on,face,his )

To “open one’s eyes” is associated with being able to see. Alternate translation: “Then Yahweh gave Balaam the ability to see the angel of Yahweh”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) with his drawn sword

(Some words not found in UHB: and,opened YHWH DOM both_eyes_of Bilˊām and=he/it_saw DOM angel YHWH standing in/on/at/with,road and,sword,his drawn in=his/its=hand and,bowed_down and,falling on,face,his )

A sword is drawn from its sheath in order to be ready to use. See how you translated this in Numbers 22:23. Alternate translation: “with his sword ready to attack”

Note 3 topic: translate-symaction

(Occurrence 0) Balaam lowered his head and lay facedown

(Some words not found in UHB: and,opened YHWH DOM both_eyes_of Bilˊām and=he/it_saw DOM angel YHWH standing in/on/at/with,road and,sword,his drawn in=his/its=hand and,bowed_down and,falling on,face,his )

This indicates that Balaam is humbling himself before the angel.
