10:16 The coming persecution

(Mark 13:9-13, Luke 21:12-17)

16[ref]Look out, because I’m sending you out like sheep among the wolves, so you’ll all need to be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17[ref]But watch out because there’s people that will turn you in to the councils and then you’ll be flogged in their meeting halls. 18You’ll be stood before governors and even kings on my account, but it’ll be a testimony to them and to the non-Jews. 19However, whenever they turn you in, you don’t need to worry about what to say or how to say it, because whatever you all need to say will be given to you at the right time, 20because you won’t be the ones speaking, but it’ll be your father’s spirit speaking through you.

21[ref]One sibling will turn in another to be executed, and a father his child, and children will be rebelling against their parents and having them put to death. 22[ref]You all will be hated by everyone because of my name, but the ones who endure until the end, they are the ones who will be saved. 23Whenever they persecute you in one city, escape to the next city, because I can assure you that you won’t get through all the cities in Israel before humanity’s child comes.

24[ref]An apprentice is not above their teacher, nor is a slave above their master. 25[ref]The apprentice is happy to eventually become like their teacher, and the slave to become like their master. If they accuse the home owner of being a devil, then that will apply to his followers even more.

9[ref]So be careful. You’ll be turned over to local councils for questioning, will be whipped in the religious meeting halls, and will be stood in front of governors and kings because of following me. But you’ll be able to present your life stories to them 10and it’s right that the good news first[fn] be proclaimed to every country. 11But whenever they bring you along to hand you over, don’t worry in advance about what you’re going to say to defend yourselves, but wait until the hearing proceeds and speak what you are given then, because then it won’t be you speaking, but God’s spirit. 12In those times, a brother will report on his brother to have him executed, and a father report on his child, and children will be encouraged to report on their own parents and then they’ll be executed as a result. 13[ref]And every one will hate you all because they hate my name, but anyone who endures to the end will be saved.

13:10 TD: It’s not clear here what was meant by ‘first’—‘first’ before what?

12But before all that happens, they’ll be arresting you all, and persecuting you. You’ll be handed over to the meeting halls and prisons. Some of you will be stood in front of kings and governors because of my name 13but it will turn out to be a way to tell them about me. 14[ref]So be confident that you all don’t need to figure out in advance what you will say in your defence 15because I’ll give you the words to say and wisdom which all of those opposing you won’t be able to resist or speak against. 16But you’ll also be turned in even by parents and siblings, other relatives and friends, and some of you will be sentenced to death. 17You all will be hated by everyone because of my name,
