Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

21:5-38 When Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem (21:6), his disciples questioned when it would take place and what signs would accompany it (21:7). Jesus responded by describing the events surrounding the destruction of the Temple and the return of the Son of Man (21:8-36). This sermon is known as the Olivet Discourse because the Mount of Olives was the site of Jesus’ teaching (see Matt 24:3; Mark 13:3).

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 21:5–38: Jesus taught about what would happen in the future

After the events of the preceding section, some of Jesus’ disciples were admiring the beautiful stones and gifts that people used to adorn the Temple. Jesus told them that one day the Temple would be completely destroyed. Enemies would attack Jerusalem and destroy the Temple. In A.D. 70, the Jews rebelled against the Romans, and the Roman destroyed the temple. Jesus also told them about other things that would happen in the future. He told them that after these things happened, he would return to earth in power and great glory. He warned his disciples to pray so that they would be able to endure the future troubles and be ready to meet him when he comes again.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some examples of other headings are:

The Jerusalem temple would soon be destroyed

The destruction of the temple and the coming times of trouble

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 24:1–35 and Mark 13:1–31.

21:17

And you will be hated by everyone because of My name.

And you will be hated by everyone: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as you will be hated by everyone is passive. It is literally “you will be hated by all,” as in the RSV. You may use a passive form as the BSB does, or an active one. For example:

All men will hate you (NIV)

Use the form that is most natural in your language.

will be hated: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as will be hated means “will be detested, will be opposed and be the object of hostility.” Jesus was warning his disciples that many people will oppose them and feel hostile toward them. Some other ways to translate this are:

will oppose you

be against you

reject you

In some languages there is an idiom to express the meaning of be hated. For example:

kill you in the heart

everyone: The word everyone here refers to people in general, including both men and women. The context implies that it refers to people who do not believe in Jesus and follow him. It may imply that all kinds of people will hate Jesus’ disciples, including both young and old people, rich and poor people, people of different cultures and occupations. The word everyone does not literally mean every person in every place.

because of My name: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates literally as because of My name is very similar to the phrase in 21:12. You should translate it in a similar way here. See the note on 21:12b for translation advice.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων

˱you_all˲_will_be ˓being˒_hated (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπό πάντων διά τό ὄνομα μού)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [everyone will hate you]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπὸ πάντων

˱you_all˲_will_be ˓being˒_hated (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπό πάντων διά τό ὄνομα μού)

The term all is a generalization for emphasis. Alternate translation: [many people will hate you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἔσεσθε μισούμενοι ὑπό πάντων διά τό ὄνομα μού)

Here, name represents Jesus himself. Alternate translation: [because of me] or [because you are my disciples]
