TSNTyndale Study Notes:

5:1-32 The genealogies of Genesis go beyond simply recording history. By selective information and by structure, they communicate spiritual truth. The genealogies highlight God’s blessing, authenticate the family heritage of important individuals, and hold the Genesis narrative together by showing familial continuity. Adam’s genealogy through Seth traces ten generations to Noah (see 1 Chr 1:1-4; Luke 3:36-38), with the flood intervening before another ten generations from Noah to Abram. The number ten indicates completeness (ten plagues, Exod 7:8–11:10; Ten Commandments, Exod 20:2-17). Noah closed history before the flood, and Abram inaugurated a new era.

Alternate translation: “whom he named”

Note 1 topic: translate-names

נֹ֖חַ

Noḩa

If you include the meaning of Noah’s name in your translation or in a footnote, make sure it matches what Lamech says about him in the following quote so it is clear why he was given that name.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

לֵאמֹ֑ר

to=say

What Lamech says next is the reason that he named his son Noah. Make sure that is clear in your translation. Alternate translation: “He named him that because he had said about him,”

זֶ֞֠ה יְנַחֲמֵ֤נוּ

this he=will_console/comfort_us

Alternate translation: “This son will relieve us” or “This son will give us relief”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

מִֽמַּעֲשֵׂ֨נוּ֙ וּמֵעִצְּב֣וֹן יָדֵ֔ינוּ

from=our=work/action and=from=worry/pain our=both_hands

These two phrases have similar meanings and emphasize how difficult the work was. Consider what is the best way to communicate that in your language. Alternate translation: “from the difficult labor and work we have to do with our hands” or “from the agonizing work that we have to do”

מִן הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵֽרְרָ֖הּ יְהוָֽה

Alternate translation: “as we farm the ground that Yahweh has cursed.”
