TSNTyndale Study Notes:

18:1-31 The migration of the Danites (cp. Josh 19:40-48) is the story of that tribe’s failure to obey God’s covenant, and it is indicative of Israel’s decline. What began as Micah’s private heresy (Judg 17:4-5) would become the apostasy of an entire tribe (18:30-31). What began as covenant failure (1:19-36) turned into social breakdown in the days of Jephthah and Samson (chs 11–16). In the end, law and order were replaced by banditry and pillaging (18:27-28).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) Are you doing nothing?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said come, and,go_up against,them that/for/because/then/when seen DOM the=earth/land and=see/lo/see! good very and,you_all do_nothing not hesitate to=go to,enter_in to,possess DOM the=earth/land )

This rhetorical question is asked sarcastically and means that they should be doing the opposite. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “You should be acting now!” (See also: figs-doublenegatives)

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

(Occurrence 0) Do not be slow to attack

(Some words not found in UHB: and=they_said come, and,go_up against,them that/for/because/then/when seen DOM the=earth/land and=see/lo/see! good very and,you_all do_nothing not hesitate to=go to,enter_in to,possess DOM the=earth/land )

These two negative words “not” and “slow” together emphasize the positive idea to attack quickly. Alternate translation: “Hurry! Attack”
