TSNTyndale Study Notes:

Ps 115 In this hymn of thanksgiving for God’s blessings, the community ascribes all glory to the name of the Lord, who is the true source of hope and blessing. Meanwhile, those who trust in idols are greatly disappointed. The blessing of the Creator of heaven and earth extends to future generations (115:14), and especially to the priesthood (115:12).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

The dead

(Some words not found in UHB: not the, dead praise LORD and=not all/each/any/every go_down silence )

The adjective “dead” may be translated with a noun phrase. Alternate translation: “People who are dead”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

nor do any who go down into silence

(Some words not found in UHB: not the, dead praise LORD and=not all/each/any/every go_down silence )

This parallel phrase has a similar meaning to phrase before it. The verb may be supplied from that previous phrase to make the meaning clear. Alternate translation: “nor do any who go down into silence praise Yahweh” (See also: figs-parallelism)

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

nor do any who go down into silence

(Some words not found in UHB: not the, dead praise LORD and=not all/each/any/every go_down silence )

The writer speaks of the grave or the place of the dead as a place of silence where no one can speak. This is a euphemism for death. Alternate translation: “nor do any who go to the place of the dead” (See also: figs-euphemism)
