Acts 10

10 There was a certain man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 devout and fearing God with all his household, doing many acts of charity to the people and praying to God continually.

3 He saw in a vision clearly about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him and saying to him, “Cornelius.” 4 And he, gazing intently at him and becoming fearful, said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your acts of charity have ascended [as a memorial][fn] before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa and summon [a certain][fn] Simon who is called Peter; 6 he is staying with a certain Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

7 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, 8 and having explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

9 The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour [[of the day]].[fn] 10 And he became hungry and wanted to eat. But while they were preparing, he fell into a trance 11 and saw the heavens opened and something like a [great][fn] sheet descending [[upon him]],[fn] [[having been bound and]][fn] being let down by its four corners upon the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth and birds of the sky [[and wild beasts]].[fn]

13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, [Peter;][fn] kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything common and unclean.”

15 [And][fn] a voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.”

16 This happened three times, and [immediately][fn] the sheet was taken up to heaven.

17 Now as Peter was perplexed in himself as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, [[and]][fn] behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood at the gate 18 and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.

19 While Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said [to him],[fn] “Behold, [three][fn] men are looking for you. 20 But rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them.”

21 {And}[fn] Peter went down to the men [[who had been sent from Cornelius]][fn] and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for. [[What do you want?]][fn] What is the reason for your coming?” 22 And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear words from you.” 23 Therefore, [[Peter]][fn] having summoned them, he showed hospitality.

On the next day {he rose and}[fn] went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. 24 And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. 25 {When Peter entered,}[fn] Cornelius [[having leapt up and]][fn] met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped [[him]].[fn] 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am [[as you are also]][fn] a man.” 27 And [as he talked with him,][fn] he went in and found many persons gathered.

28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for [[by you]],[fn] I came without objection. Therefore, I ask, what reason did you send for me.”

30 {And}[fn] Cornelius said, “Four days ago [[I was fasting]],[fn] about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing 31 and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your acts of charity have been remembered before God. 32 Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is staying in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea, [[who, when he comes, will speak to you.]]’[fn] 33 So I sent for you at once [[urging you to come]],[fn] and you have been kind enough to come [[quickly]].[fn] Now therefore {we are all here}[fn] {in the presence of God}[fn] to hear all that you have been commanded by {the Lord}.”[fn]

34 Opening [his mouth],[fn] Peter said, “In truth, I understand that God is not a respecter of persons, 35 but in every nation, the one who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him.

36 “[[For]][fn] The word [which][fn] was sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ, this one is Lord of all, 37 You know {the word that}[fn] that took place throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John proclaimed, 38 Jesus from Nazareth, how God anointed[fn] him with the Holy Spirit[fn] and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.

39 “And we [[indeed]][fn] are witnesses of [all][fn] the things he did both in the country of the Jews [and in Jerusalem].[fn] They [also][fn] killed him, hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him {on}[fn] the third day and made him to appear, 41 not to all the people, but to [witnesses][fn] [[us]][fn] chosen beforehand by God, [to us,][fn] who ate and drank with him [[and associated with him]][fn] after he rose from the dead [[for forty days]].[fn] 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that {this one}[fn] is the one appointed by [[the plan and foreknowledge of]][fn] God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 [To this one][fn] All the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit[fn] fell upon all those who were listening to the message. 45 And the believers from the circumcision who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and magnifying God.

Then Peter responded, 47 “Can anyone withhold the water for these not to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of {Jesus Christ}.[fn]

Then they asked him to stay for a few days.
